'Kay. Tomorrow's my interview with a lawyer for a summer internship. I have my resume done, but would a cover letter be necessary? What should be on the cover letter? And on my resume, what would look good in the "skills" section? Would saying that I speak Spanish proficiently look good? Thanks. I need the advice. NOW!!!

add "i never procrastinate" in pencil

That was cute! Stupid finals made me forget

Write a cover letter about your interest in the internship (why you want it, what you want to learn, how it will help you later in your career/life, etc.) and thank them for considering you.

Include your Spanish skills under..well..skills. :)

sign your name as "righteous kristine" can boost your image

and randomly jump up from your chair and shout "objection" whenever he asks you an unfavorable question

Hahaha! Cheesy, but impressive!

Thanks to you also, Leah377! Now, I'm not nervous about the interview itself. I ace those. I just don't know what to put on my resume besides other volunteer experience and my rank and GPA.

i would seriously consider putting some benign sarcasm on the CV. after all stupid people can't use humor

Okay, RV, here's what to do:

under skills, put ANYTHING that might be useful. Being bilingual, being a good writer, responsible, educated...anything that might make you look like a good candidate.

If you've had a job before, put it under work exp. If you've been in any clubs before, put it under extracurrics with the years you were in said clubs and any positions. If you've played an instrument for a long time, put that there [it shows dedication]. Remember, the key here is to make yourself look as qualified and as responsible/intelligent/mature as you possibly can.

Okay, cool. Thanks! Now I have it down!

Benign sarcasm... I've got it, Spectrum. The woman doesn't seem to have a sense of humor, though. The first thing she told me over the phone was "I don't pay", lol.

well, i was going to suggest flirting, but i guess it won't work on a woman... unless, of course...

Naw... it doesn't suit my preferences. If I were a guy, boy, would that be a blast.

Skills also include proficiency in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, or computer languages (C++, HTML, etc.)

Just Microsoft Word and PowerPoint. Is that alright?

Oh, about the cover letter: it should be written to express interest in the firm. ALWAYS include it when you're sending an app/resume over mail, fax, or in an introduction when scheduling interviews. Make it on the same type of paper as your resume. It should be typed, grammatically correct, organized, neat, not torn or bent, etc etc, and you should prob. get someone to proofread it before turning it in.

The body of a cover letter:

Enclosure: Resume

Good luck! (: I'm interning for a law firm over the summer too, so I know how nervewracking it is to apply.

Alright! Thank you so much. So you're saying that I should have my resume enclosed in an envelope or something? Would it be alright if I just paper clipped the resume and the cover letter? Sorry. If this helps you obtain a better perspective of who's speaking, I'll just let you know I'm a freshman who wants to stay out of the house as much as possible for all my high school summers.

paper clipping will work: an envelope won't be needed. Props to you for getting an internship as a froshie: not many have the insight to go and get one. It'll help you immensely in the future.

For now, I wouldn't worry TOO much about the little things, since you ARE a freshman, after all. They'll be lax with you because they know you're just getting into this sort of thing.

Just as a tip: if you need help finding stuff to put in your resume, use the headings Objective [Offering excellent communication, fashion, and marketing skills. Seek to apply these skills as a sales associate/assisstant manager in a specialty store.], Skills and Abilities [Customer Service and Sales, Cashiering and computer Register Experience, Creative with Displays, Enthusiastic Team Member, Fluent in Spanish, Knowledge of MS Word and Excel], Awards and Acheivements [clubs in the format of 'Future Business leaders of America, Chapter President, 2001 enter, tab Santa Barbara High School', California Schlarship Federation Member, 3 years enter, tab Santa Barbara High School], Work Experience [Banking Occupations, Regional Occupational Program enter, tabCustomer Service Rep, Bank of America, enter tab 100 hours on-the-job training, Sales Associate The Disney Store, Santa Barabara, CA, Fall 2000] and Education and Training [grades and rank in format of 'School, Class, GPA, rank', any classes pertaining to law that would help you in the firm]

we all hate puny little freshmen

especially the smart and ambitious ones :)

Oh: bold the headers, put each different thing that I seperated on a seperate line, except for the Objective, which will be a sentence/paragraph, and head the resume with
[c]NAME
Address line 1
Address line 2
Phone[/c]

Okay. Thanks. Yeah, I already have the resume set up and completed. It's just the cover letter that I had some concerns about. I'll use your new advice to revise my resume if I feel it's needed. But I'm glad you took the time to help me out. Thanks!

Besides filing papers and doing some writing, what else will I most likely be doing? There is NO WHERE in the yellow pages which states what kind of law she practices. I'm trying to find as much as I can online right now.
