i was asked how many schools i was applying to. when i said '6', i felt it necessary to explain to her which ones and why i was applying to so many.

Did everyone who got an interview ask for one by the December 1 deadline? Has anyone had an interview who didn't do that? Also, how to people feel about being asked about your other schools to which you are applying? That seems pretty common...but more importantly, is it 'proper' do you think? I mean, are they just curious, or can that list of other schools work against you, or actually in your favor? Or does it make no difference?

I sent in my Duke application in late December and was contacted for an interview last week. It soulds like the interview is not too serious to your admission to Duke, just a way for the school to get to know you a little better.

Hey, I have my interview this weekend, anyone know any questions that are asked and such? I would like to be prepared since I have an anxiety disorder, and tend to get overly nervous over small things like this.

actually natty, the interview questions are whatever the interviewer decides to ask. there is no set guideline. id say just say why you applied to duke and talk about something you'd like to experience, my interviewer Loved how i brought up tent city

The interviewer will probably want to know what you can contribute to the Duke community. It can be tough to come up with an answer to that one on the spot, so think about it ahead of time.

If you tend to get nervous, rehearse your first line ("Thank you for meeting with me" or even just "It's nice to meet you"). Be sure to make eye contact and smile when you shake hands.

If you're not getting contacted, talk to other people you know who have had an interview. I had to do this last year, and contacted the interviewer.

I had a phone interview with a different interviewer than the one another applicant on my own street had.

well yeah I had a different interviewer but contacting the other guy helped me get my foot into the door.

You can call the Duke Alumni Office to set one up if you still haven't had one, though my kid was told Duke admissions office that interviews aren't even considered in the evaluation, that they are solely for the benefit of the student to learn more about Duke. Good to know.

the interviewer -does- have to fill out a little form that they give to the admissions people. so they obviously look at how your interview went even if it's not that important. plus, on college board it has interview on the 'considered' list.

charmedone: They might have to fill out a little form, and maybe it gets put in your folder. At this point, who can tell. I just know what the admissions person actually said, which was on the order of...'we don't even consider it, nor do we even look at anything connected with the interview...it's totally set up for the student.' Perhaps the form they complete is simply "person had an interview.'
