My friend told me he has an interview tomorrow, and that means he made it past the first round, i wasn’ t sure if that is correct or not, and I told him not to get his hopes up and that they probably do it to everyone, is there any truth behind that statement? thanks

not true. everyone gets one.

here is another quote from him:
the lady at the info session said they review all the applications... then the top half (according to GPA/SATs) they look at extracurricular, essays, etc
and schedule interviews for

That's ridiculous. Are you telling me that they finish reading everything by say, Nov 3? I got my interview contact Nov 2 and trust me, they can't read everything in one day.

Ok, he is probably just over excited, or misunderstood the person, b/c he wants to go to penn so much, cool down, i was just checking

a kid from my school applied ED, was ranked 26th and had a 1370. I didn't get called for an interview, I'm ranked 12th and have a 1470. Another kid is ranked in the 30's and has a 1440 and wasn't called.

I defintely don't think it means you made it past the first round.

It can mean that they're iffy about your stats though - If you're really amazing or really terrible and they have a good feeling about the decision already then they won't push for an interview, but if you're on the borderline or they have quns about something on your app that seems weird then they'll push for an interview. This may only be true of intl students though where the geographical area covered is a lot wider. Domestic students - if you don't get an interview, call up and ask why and they tell you it's because there is no alumni committee in your area - don't panic, this is true.

I got called for an interview a day or two after I submitted my application. Maybe that's true for later interviews, but how could they possibly have reviewed our applications in a day or two and determine who's borderline.

What lauraanne says might be true. But, it isn't a bad thing. We can suppose all sorts of things. Suppose they read your app and it seems professionally packaged.....exceptional in so many ways. Then, they look at your background (you're a financially disadvantaged student, first gen, etc). If your app seems really unusual for your circumstances, they may want to meet you to make sure you're really who your app says you are. This is a very good thing (if you're legit).

What if you have exceptional leadership experience on your app? You claim to have been a National Pres of a huge organization....something like that. They'll want to meet you and dig a little deeper....to see how passionate you are about this huge responsibility (or do you glaze over it and focus on something else which might indicate that your role is fluff).

Now, the interviewer doesn't have info on your app. They don't see it. So, the messages being sent to Admissions are sent by YOU (via the interviewers report).

I guess what I'm saying is that there are so many reasons why you might get interviewed. Many of them (in my head) are good. Imagine an adcom reading your app and being totally confused because you're so different from the many other fabulous candidates. Can you imagine them looking at the app and thinking "this kid seems too good to be true."

Seriously though, I think the assignment of interviews is random. I believe Penn when they say so...and they did say so.

no. sending in your application means you're past the first round. it weeds out the people who didn't bother to apply. [insert sarcastic tone here]

i don't really think just getting an interview is a clear indication that you are a potential candidate just yet.

random story:

a friend of mine applying to MIT was asked for an interview. Where did the interviewer tell him to meet her? Wharton.

the people at penn admissions told me that interviews were dependent on how much time the alumni in your area have. so if you dont get an interview, the alumni interviews just didnt have the time to get around to giving everyone an interview. i really dont think its a big deal at all, and im pretty sure its random

can anyone tell me how much interviews matter and how much a really good interview weighs?

im not sure about penn, but from everyone in my area that had their harvard interviews, they sed it sucked and dsnt matter...one interviewer even ASKED the student to fill out his OWN evaluation and send it...how insane is that!

obviously, interviews have minimal weight (especially with the lack of coordination present in the process)

crap. mine went really well. alas.

first typos. then ss#. now interviews don't carry weight?! what's next, me falling into a pile of acid?!

just from that last post you can tell how tired I am ... "pile of acid"

i'm wearing an apron to my interview. nothing else, just an apron.

Well unless you're a racist/jackass at the interview, it shouldn't matter.

Well, I really liked my interview, the lady was AWESOME! She said I WAS AWESOME! It lasted like 45-50 minutes. :) But, I am a little bit confused. Have you guys ever seen your interview sheets? For some reason, my said "International Studies"...I guess it made sense, since I am applying to Huntsman, but, shouldn't it be "Economics" or "Wharton" or something...? Since I don't expect to get into Huntsman and that I ED'ed Wharton, too. It didn't even HAVE "Business" on there!

the same type of thing happened to my friend last year catch-22...he applied to oxford(england), and at his interview, they started talking about environmental studies, even though he was going to major in international relations or something...not sure how that worked out
