Interview On-Campus

Hi, I've been reading the posts on interviews and specifically Pomona interviews, but there were some things that I still needed clarification and help on.

So my interview is tomorrow at 11 AM and I'm taking it very seriously because Pomona is my top choice and I think I'm going to apply ED there.

So when I get there and go to the Office of Admissions and give them my card for the interview, what happens next? Does someone take me to a room and I sit down and interview with them?

Also, what type of questions did they ask you?

Were there any tricky or random questions or current event related questions?

When I spoke the the kind lady about setting up the interview, she recommended that I do a campus tour as well so she set my interview earlier so I would have time after. Now should I come earlier and do a campus tour first or do it after the interview?

And lastly, what should I wear. I know for interview you should dress nicely like dress pants and a dress shirt, or khaki's and a polo and what not, but the lady told me to be casual and not come in anything formal and come with my interests and passions, so what should I wear because I'm going to take a campus tour that day too, and it's VERYY HOTTTT here since I'm about a 15 min drive from the 5C's should I wear nice jeans and a v-neck or a polo shirt, and what shoes should I wear also?

Thank you!!!

My D (admitted ED) was interviewed by a senior. She said it was basically a conversation that made her realize how well-informed she already was about Pomona. You probably already know a lot too, if you’re thinking of applying ED. So even though you know a lot, try to have some questions ready to ask, but mostly just be prepared to talk about why you’re interested in Pomona, what you hope to do in college, and other topics that will naturally arise. Her interview did not involve any trick questions!

She dressed very casually - I think she might even have been wearing shorts - and it was not a problem (but it was kind of necessary because she was coming from a sports activity). If you wear a polo and some decent looking shorts and flip flops, that would probably be just fine. But if you want to go dressier, nice jeans or khakis would be appropriate.

Good luck tomorrow, and enjoy your visit!

I interviewed in the Spring. Basically you just hand in the card and a senior interviewer will come. My interviewer was dressed formally. I dressed in a dress shirt and jeans, which I think was ok. Don’t wear shorts or flip-flops though. My interview wasn’t that casual, but my interviewer kind of sucked (like I said, she was very formal), so I guess it depends. As for the questions, don’t worry about it. They just ask you the expected questions: Why Pomona, what is your high school like, what was your schedule, what was your favorite class, etc. The second half of the interview is you asking the interviewer questions, so think of good ones. Good luck.

Oh, and I think going on the tour beforehand may be helpful because you’ll have a better idea of what Pomona is like, but it doesn’t really matter if you’re well informed.

Although it seems to be more common to be interviewed by a senior, I was actually interviewed by an alumnus; I think I remember him saying he was from the Class of '78. My interview lasted about 45 minutes and there weren’t any trick questions, it basically turned into a super casual conversation about our lives. He even spent about ten minutes telling me about all the traveling he did after graduating Pomona. Make sure you know your stuff though and think of some good questions, not ones that could be answered by spending 5 minutes on the website. My interviewer was really impressed by how well I knew the school.

Thank you so much for the advice everyone! Yes I’ve really researched the school and read through the PC Owner’s manual many many times for fun! and yes I prepared some nice interesting questions that I am really curious about!
