Interview Optional?

While I applied to Princeton, I was not planning to do an interview. However, I was emailed and invited by one of their alums to have an interview, and feeling obligated to do one because of the email, I accepted.

I guess this is a more general question, since I have also received emails from other schools I applied to about doing an interview.

On these schools' websites, including Princeton, they say that those that do not do interviews are not at a disadvantage. But getting these emails and invitations, I feel as if I have to or it conveys a lack of interest in the school. And I know these interviews don't hurt, but they do make me nervous nonetheless.

So what I'm trying to say is, are the interviews really optional? Would it be okay to deny the invitation?

They are “optional” in the sense that they are not mandatory for admission. There simply aren’t alumni to conduct interviews in every part of the world. But if you are invited for an interview, you should take it. It’s not optional on your end.
