Interview [please read]

I submitted my app about a week and half ago. I have not been contacted for an interview. Kids that applied to Penn last year from my school were not offered an interview either, so I think it may be because of location even though my region does have an active committee. Anyway, I was wondering if not having an interview will hurt me. I know they say it doesn’t but I can’t help but feel that I am at a disadvantage, especially since I think my outgoing personality is sort of my selling point.

Basically what I’m asking is if the interview really holds any weight at all. Also, is there anything I can do to get an interview?

I never got one…

I’m pretty sure the way it works is that if you are offered an interview and decline, it hurts you a LOT. If you have an interview and it goes absolutely terribly, it hurts you a LOT. If you have an interview and it goes well, it does almost nothing. The admissions committee understands that not everyone will have an interview. It’s out of your control and they will not hold it against you.

So there is no benefit to receiving an interview? Even if you do great, it doesn’t really matter. Seems like it’s almost better to NOT get one.

It holds minimal weight. I think Penn only uses it to check if there is anything more they can learn about you or verify their impression of you. Don’t worry, most people do not get one.

Do we have to request for an interview or does Penn contact you for an interview?
I have submitted my app about a week back but haven’t heard from them regarding an interview.

Penn doesn’t contact you for an interview. Their alumni does. I know someone who interviews Dartmouth hopefuls, and I don’t know if it’s the same policy, but this is what I was told: the college releases a list of local applicants to willing alumni, and it’s up to the alumni whether or not they want to interview the hopeful.

My son applied and was accepted last year via early decision. Most people who live near other alumni get an interview. It is very casual. You should just come prepared to discuss why you are going the ED route. Usually happens at a starbucks. Won’t make or break your chances.
