Interview Questions

Hey guys!

Hoping to get some advice from audition alumni (haha!), or parents of audition alumni. When visiting a school you’ve been accepted too, what are some great questions to ask faculty? Looking for questions about stuff schools may not post about or talk about, but you felt you wish you had known before picking a school! Also any other things you now feel are important in a program or to a school and why. Just trying to research as MUCH as possible before I pick a program!!!

Thank you!!!

My daughter asked about the shows they had previous done and what ones were coming up.

Here are a few we have used. Mostly open ended that give you a chance to read body language, what’s NOT being said…stuff like that.

What do you like most about this school?
What is your favorite class to teach?
What is the hardest part about this program?
What makes students the most successful in this program?

Here is a thread we had last year that was really helpful:

I second the link MTMommaJAA posted. We sent e-mails to the heads of the programs where she was accepted with most of the questions that are in that thread. It helped a lot with determining where she wanted to attend coupled with visits.

Thank you so much!! This is so helpful!!!

Are all classes permitted to audition for shows?
What types of opportunities are there to audition for summer stock? (some schools have on site auditions)
What are their policies on working in community theatre while you are in school?

If possible, you might try to set up a voice lesson with one of the faculty - timing/availability is often tricky - or perhaps sit in on a current student’s lesson.

If you do not have the exact curriculum and requirements for the degree, ask for it. Seems obvious, but surprisingly students don’t know the exact requirements and are sometimes surprised at the differences that exist program to program. Lots of times it may be presented in a sequential order term by term. If not, it’s a good idea to work that out yourself so you really understand what you will be studying before you accept an offer.

If you are planning a visit, ask if the student may sit in on classes. Son did this and also was hosted for a sleep over at one school. This helped him to get a better feel for the typical day for a student.
