Interview questions

I just got an interview request from Univ. Of Chicago. I was told it would be more of a conversation with questions to guide the discussion. What kind of questions should I expect?

Thanks!

It can be somewhat variable, but here’s what I ask as an alumni interviewer (I made these up–they didn’t come from official guidelines or anything):

  1. Why are you interested in the University of Chicago? This is probably the most important one. I'm looking to see that you've done at least a little bit of research and can distinguish it from other schools, and that you're excited about it. It really bugs me when students have clearly done no basic research at all--never heard of the core curriculum, wants to major in business and (not molecular) engineering, etc.
  2. What is your favorite subject in school now? What do you think you'd like to study in college? Is there anything you've never studied before, perhaps that wasn't available in high school, that you'd like to explore? I use this to guide the conversation and to share relevant info about the school related to their interests.
  3. What do you like to do for fun? Is there anything new you're excited about trying in college? Same reasons as above.
  4. What's the best book you've read in the past year?
  5. Do you have any favorite newspapers, magazines, websites, or blogs?
  6. Is there anything you want the admissions people to know that you feel that you can't convey elsewhere in your application?
  7. Do you have any questions for me?

That usually takes us to an hour.

^^^Sounds very much like my son’s interview last fall.

Those sample interview questions by the first poster was almost exactly the questions asked by my interviewer not too long ago. It really was a casual conversation. So yeah, why Uchicago, what are your favorite subjects, what are your interests, what do you do for fun, and what ECs you do. Oh, and what are you most proud about, that one was by far the hardest question.

Thank you guys so much for your responses! I’m super excited for my interview and these example questions really helped to calm my nerves a little!
