I chose not to do an interview. The website says this “may” place the student at a disadvantage. Is this true? Does anyone know people who got into Bates without an interview?

I do think the interview is an extremely important factor at Bates. I know I've read that those who interview are admitted at a significantly higher rate than those who do not. It's not, however, impossible to get in if you don't have one. Bates really cares about demonstrated interest, so if you can't interview, try to demonstrate that interest in as many other ways possible.

Only 13% of students who do not interview are accepted and a lot of those are off the waitlist. The interview is defintely extremely important at Bates, and no matter what your stats are, you are most likely to be waitlisted if you don't have an interview. There are some exceptions to this, such as international students, but generally this holds true. Bates really wants people who would fit well with the school and who are most likely to use the resources they have.

Here is the article that talks about the statistics and other things about admission to Bates: http://www.bates.edu/x66346.xml

Best of Luck!

Rachie. I was just deferred from Bowdoin. I didn't submit SAT scores but am a very strong student. Do you think I will get accepted to Bates ED II. I had an interview and thought it went will. I know you didn't get into Bowdoin- were you deferred? Do you know other people at Bates who didn't get into Bowdoin? I'm wondering if I have a decent shot at Bates- I am pretty disillusioned with the Bowdoin deferral. You saw my stats before and I was wondering if you know anyone who ranked in the top 5 percent of their class or better who got in without submitting SATs. I hope that Bates is true to their word that they don't put much emphasis on SATs. I'm thinking that Bowdoin deceived me. Or maybe it wasn't because of the SATs- who knows. Also, would you describe the people at Bates to be very friendly- like friendlier and less cliquey than highschool? I greatly appreciate your input! Thankyou so much!
