in the appliation process for brown undergrad, is an interview required, recommended, or optional???

It's optional, but recommended, from what I remember.

I would suggest you opt for one. I have a fabulous interviewer and I see it as working in your favor.

i didn't have a face-to-face alumni interview, but an alum called me on the day that their interview reports were due, and asked if I wanted to chat. We talked for about 25 minutes -- I was so unprepared. But he was very nice, and recognized that it was a very impromptu phone call. I guess they didn't hold it against me, because I got in. I'm not sure how much weight the interview had, but I'm sure that it only helped me, since my stats alone were nothing spectacular. I think Brown really tries to get to know the person behind the application. I noticed this especially with their teacher recommendation forms -- they asked very in-depth, personal questions of the teachers making the recommendations, more-so than other schools. I am convinced that it was my recommendations, my essays, and possibly my interview that earned me an acceptance, because although my grades were good, my test scores certainly were not!

i'm kind of wondering how much stock they really put on these interviews since mine mostly consisted of my interviewer talking about his high school days at a rival school of mine.

but maybe it helped show i was "different" or whatever since i was wearing a costume for a show that was opening that night. (not exactly what i normally wear to interviews... but it's a cast bonding thing..)

if I opt for an alum interview, would it be best if i dressed up; suit, tie, jacket, the whole shabam?

I don't think so. I mean you're trying to show your interviewer who you are and, unless you dress up everyday, it may seem as if you're trying too hard. I went to my interview almost straight after work in jeans and a jacket. I think my interviewer was wearing the same thing.

so it is not expected that you wear a suit for the almni interview?

Noooo... wear nice pants (khakis or non-ripped-up jeans) and a clean shirt (collared, if you like, but no tie). Even sneakers are fine as long as they're not beaten up.

ok cool thanks Ill remember that...do you know about like other schools whether for alumni interviews if you have to wear a suit or just normal clothes (for example HYP)

Yeah, for most schools you should just look "nice" but not dressed up. For example, as a girl, I wore nice slacks and a sweater to one interview, a long silk skirt and a cotton shirt to another, etc. Some people wear suits or dress up a little bit more, but I'd say it's definitely not necessary, especially if it's not what you normally like to wear. The more comfortable and "genuine" you are, the better you'll come across.

Actually, I think it's best to dress completely normal. Most (but far from all) of these interviewers graduated recently, so they're young and probably don't have conservative ideas about dress. Interviews are incredibly and surprisingly informal. They're not lying when they tell you that it's more for your sake (to get to know the school) than for theirs. The more normal and comfortable you are, the more you'll be able to comfortably and normally talk to your interviewer. You want the interviewer to like you on a personal level, not be impressed by your academic accomplishments or ability to speak formally.

I do alumni interviewing for Brown, and I always tell the applicants that they can dress casually. However, it is important to look clean!

Yeah, make sure you've showered that day. Don't come covered in dirt or anything.

One of my interviewees applied lip gloss during our interview...
(She got in...)

A T-shirt did the trick for me not that I'd recommend it as a general rule though

Dress as you see fit and feel comfortable with without being loud

I happen to be an alumni interviewer for Brown, and the interview is not required but it is recommended. There is no interview with anyone in the admissions department.Do not worry about the interview. If my view of it is correct, the interview is to determine your interest in Brown, and to answer any questions that the applicant has. My son's alumni interview when he appied early decision involved cool cars and good movies that were out, if I recall. Since most of my interviews of students were right after school, clothing really didn't matter, and I hope it doesn't matter for any interviewer, because that is not what Brown is about.

ahahahaha, "shabam" = cracked me up

thanks a lot guys, i think that answered my question
