I just had an interview with Harvard about 1 week ago. I was wondering why would they interview me right at the beginning of february. Isnt it kinda late. I mean the interview went well and everything, but i have to admit they were asking a lot of questions. And i just had an interview with Yale like 2 days ago, weird thing was both these schools were trying to make me go to private homes of there workers in the area but i opted for their respective offices in the area. Do most college interviews happen at private homes and/or offices of college reps. Maybe these schools are having a hard time choosing me, maybe im borderline
my stats on my app were

Im an African American Male from a slightly competitive school in Silver Spring, MD

GPA- 3.75 UW, 4.30 W, i know im 6 out of 280 but my school doesnt rank so for colleges they see top 2.5%

Family makes between 20-25 k a year for a family of 5
Had some trouble before high school and in 9th grade bad bad things but i changed

I think its maybe because i had like C's and B's in 9th grade. Or i dont know
well i just hope i make it. I showed them my midterm grades which were 4.0 so maybe that helps

umm...I have no idea why they wouldn't accept you. Poor African-american male with 1590 SAT! Rank 6/280 with awesome AP scores! Possibly published research at NIH!

dude, I wouldn't worry. btw, february is not at all a late time to do interviews (March is generally the deadline for alumni to submit them I think.)

If you're not kidding about those stats, though, you have a great chance at both Harvard and Yale. Anything could happen, but seriously...very good chance.

One of my colleges mistakenly sent me their alumni interviewer training manual (when I told them about it they told me to throw it away ASAP...I read it cover to cover, but trust me, there are no secrets to be had)

They said to NEVER meet in a private area - public places, libraries, schools, etc. are all okay though. So yes, it is strange that they would ask you to come to their house. I think you did it right, by going to their office.

Harvard and Yale are a reach for EVERYBODY [unless your name ends with Bush], so do not get your hopes up too soon, but you certainly do have impressive stats, and you stand as good a chance as anybody

he's a URM with an awesome SAT and impressive EC's- he has a better chance than most. It's true that you shouldn't get your hopes up, but you also shouldn't torment yourself with worry...

A comment about private meeting places: I have heard of many people going to their interviewer's house, but I saw an ASC video of a Yale adcom member saying that in certain cases, like a female applicant with a male interviewer, the houses of the interviewer should generally be avoided.

You probably have the highest SAT score of any African-American in the country. I'd say you're one of the very, very few shoe-ins at Harvard, Yale, ect.

Ya i thought it was a pretty weird request. But in the end the interviews were good. But i didnt think they would ask me so many questions. Even in a job interview its always im confident, ill work hard, and i wont cheat but here they maid me think real hard. It was one guy and one girl in each interview and they were diffusely writing away like at every word. But i just hope i make it and not get wait listed cuz i mean when you actually write each and every essay and do all the things you had to, for someone to say your last 4 years of school just doesnt cut it; but at least you'll get on the wait list. It must suck. Also the asian girl in my Ap euro class she applied to harvard with like 1520 and a 4.0 unweighted and she didnt have an interview. So does everyone get an interview or just those on the borderline or what. Is hers coming up or something?

Anyways that asian girl in my class shes always saying that its not fair that im black, becuase of that ill get in everywhere even though she is valedictorian with the 4.0. I told her that if i had all the parental support and financial support she had, i probably woulndt have done some of the things i did in my past including the bad grades in first semester 9th. I told her i dont have the money to go to private classes, or sat prep classes, or even the national leadership on medecine blah blah. She is rich and stuck up as hell. But i admit if there was a rich black dude and a rich asian dude they should be considered the same. But poor and minority who like me never had anyone in my family go to college (my dad didnt even finish high school, he went to ballou high in Southeast D.C.) kinda deserve that little push. But i think that i am qualified enough to at least be reasonably competitive to other harvard, yale applicants i mean damn a 3.75ish is almost the same as a 4 so its not like there going way out of line if they do pick me up, which i prey they do. Thanx for everyones answers also.

You should take her comments as a compliment--it means she see you as a peer. It's hard to see your peer as getting an edge over you when you do the same work, so be sympathetic. But she is just being stupid about this, and you are totally right. You really have had more to deal with to get ahead in your situation vs her. Also your scores are unusual and they have to beat the bushes to find you. Asian is still URM at some schools, maybe she should be applying there if she wants an edge?

What is with the "workers" thing? These would usually be Alumni, respected Alumni for that matter.

Anyway, don't overanalyize the interview. It's just one part of the mix. Not everyone gets one, but it's not based on if you're boarderline, maybe just on if you requested it in a timely fashion.

The date you get your Harvard interview depends upon the availability of your local alumni interviewers. It has nothing to do with what Harvard thinks of you. Harvard does its best to interview all US students who complete their applications. (It can be difficult to do this with international applicants because there may not be alumni volunteers in their area.)

Since interviewers are volunteers, they set the interviews at the locations that are most convenient for themselves.

I doubt if more than 20 African Americans got 800s on either the V or M SAT. In 2003, according to the Washington Post, only 72 African Americans scored higher than 1500 on the SAT. Your scores are fabulous -- for anyone.

Unless you have some major character flaw (such as having been school suspended for plagiarism or violence or such as having written an essay that was plagiarized or was racist, sexist or homophobic), you sound like the dream student of virtually any college in the country.

I do suggest, however, being careful about what you post on these boards. Your stats, location and race make you very identifiable. Adcoms and interviewers do lurk on boards like this.
