Interview Tips?

Hi! I just signed up for an off-campus interview as a spur-of-the-moment thing, but I’m getting super nervous the more I think about it. I’ve only done an interview once before, and to me it felt kinda awkward because I went in feeling like I always had to impress them, or give the answer that they’re looking for. I ended up losing track of what I wanted to say about myself and it was pretty short (lasted less than 30 minutes). I felt like I repeated some points a lot as well, since the questions sometimes overlapped each other.

With that said, does anyone have interview tips for Wellesley? I’m already (slightly) regretting my decision to sign up for an interview, but I’m fully committed to doing my best when it happens!

And at the end, when they ask if I have any questions: Is there a “right” number of questions to ask? I think I asked around 2 or 3 last time, but if I’m curious about very specific parts of Wellesley and end up asking 7 or 8 questions, would that come off as not doing enough research on my part? I’ve dug around on their website a bit and will be looking at some of the faculty research in the department I’m interested in (biology!), but would they expect me to know a lot about various aspects of student life/athletics/etc. as well?
Sorry, this post got a little long, but any tips would be much appreciated!

tldr; i need interview help :frowning:

Hi there! I signed up for an interview as soon as it even opened up, so I was pretty pumped for it! I can’t speak for all interviewers, but mine was really chill. She only flat out asked me 4 questions because conversation flowed naturally (how I heard about Wellesley, what I do outside of school, what I want to study, and what my school was like) and everything else flowed by itself!

They won’t expect you to know EVERYTHING but really try not to ask questions about things that you could find on their website (like a super specific program or what majors are offered) because you want to get a different perspective of the school, not stats or quick facts.

My interview ran for about an hour and a half and it was amazing! Definitely relax and be yourself, Wellesley really wants to see if you’d be a good fit for their school and a good way to prove that is through an interview

As a current student who LOVED their interview experience, the answer above is perfect. If you get an awesome interviewer the conversation should flow naturally, they really just want to know about you and answer any genuine questions you have. Good luck! You’ll do great.

I signed up for the interview last minute too but I’m actually excited for it. I feel like it would give me a chance two express myself more freely.

I’m an international student so I’d appreciate any views regarding any difference in the interview or even if there’s chances of me getting interviewed. Any international students applying to Wellesley?

@KattianaKitty @radish2000 thanks for the advice! I just got contacted by an alum to set up an interview. Is it weird if I ask to do it in January (right after New Year’s)? or should I schedule it within the week? Because before Jan 1st I need to focus all my energy on writing my essays for other RD schools, but I feel bad for pushing it off too much.

It’s not weird at all to ask to do it in January. Your interviewed might be relieved, since she’s probably busy with the holidays.

@microdrop18 I don’t know if you’ve already had your interview but just wanted to wish you luck!
I had my interview two weeks ago and I absolutely loved it! It was more of a conversation than a Q&A session. Not only did she get to know me but I also got to know SO much about Wellesley from her POV.

So don’t worry when you go in. You might want to do a little bit of research beforehand but don’t “memorize” anything. Ask as many questions as you want as long as you can’t find their answers on their website.

GOOD LUCK! HAPPY NEW YEAR!

@bookboozer Thanks! I had my interview yesterday and it was pretty casual. She seemed to ask questions right off the sample interview question sheet posted on the Wellesley website (good thing I prepared!)
One funny thing was that the place we planned on meeting at was closed, so we were kind of frazzled trying to find another place and had a good laugh about it at the end.
