Hey, I've just had my interview! Everything was fine, except that... when the interviewer asked me the "what other schools you're applying to?" question, I decided to first mention my safeties, then matches, then the "everyone wants" ones... but when he listened to the safety ones, he became a little shocked (his face was something like "what an abyss between MIT and these... these... "), then said "not that they aren't good as well...", then changed completely the topic!

Since I felt like I couldn't just say "wait, wait", I kept talking, and forgot to mention the top top top schools!

Doesn't mean anything. Everyone and their mother knows the rational MIT applicant would apply to safety schools, even if they do force your EC to make a disgusted face. I wouldn't worry about the interview too much, it won't make or break your chances unless something exceptional happens.

Besides, what would be the best answer? Mentioning "HYPS Wharton......" doesn't sound like a good idea. Wouldn't they think "oh, this guy will apply to sooooo many top schools, for sure he'll pass in one of them... why MIT should waste time with him?"...

Seriously don't worry about those questions. Don't feel the need to formulate a specific set of answers, because most often interviewers (and schools, if the interviewers are instructed to provide your response back to them) are just curious what the applicant pool is like (i.e. what "school blocs" (like HYPMSC) applicants apply to). It gives them a good picture of what kind of schools compete for the same candidates. It won't factor into your decision at all. Relax.

I was asked same question, and it was my first time I was having an interview so I didn't know it was customary, but I thought it would be a good opportunity to show your EC how big your ambition is, you know. Of course I did not list all the Ivy League schools :)
