Interview

I am going to be a senior in high school this year and I have an interview at the University of Rochester in 3 weeks. I'm not sure what to expect as it is my first college interview. Would the University expect to have my transcript and test scores for the interview, because I haven't sent them yet? And what sort of questions do they ask? Thanks in advance!

First off, relax. The admission people aren’t going to grill you with bright lights and rubber hoses… It’s more of “getting-to-know-you” interview and a chance for you to ask any questions you have about UR. It’s pretty informal.

You don’t need to have your scores or transcripts submitted–it’s way too early. Submit them once you’ve completed your application this fall.

Having interviewed scores of kids for another school … it’s about how well you get on, how well you can express yourself, the impression you make. It’s not about selling or defending yourself. UR is interested in whether you fit them and you should be interested in whether you fit UR. Talk about your interests. Ask questions related to your interests. Don’t talk about how lazy you are, how you sleep all day, how you like to shoplift, etc. You should probably also avoid projectile vomiting but that might serve to make you more memorable if the cause is a bug, not nerves. (“Remember him? The one who vomited on me? Nice kid.”)

Let’s say you have an interest in juggling. That’s a (surprisingly?) large group at UR. You wouldn’t necessarily know that - though I let it slip - so you might say, “Are there jugglers?” UR is a place where they want people to follow their passions. Got any passions? You might not want to mention weapons but most others work fine.

They have you fill out this little form right before you interview with the usual stuff like your current interest of study, activities/clubs, Job experiences, are you doing early decision. They pretty much worked off the sheet for me, so it was really nice to start thinking about stuff before I went in.

You just write your scores on the sheet.

Then there is the why are you looking at U of R. Take it as an opportunity to express your interest in the school and ask really good questions. I think my interview was a big reason of why I was accepted because my actual scores were awfully average.

The people interviewing are very nice and friendly. They also do a lot of the talking and provide some very cool information, so it was not bad at all.

The admissions people are very nice and helpful. I did an interview first as a high school student, and then a second time a few years later when I applied to transfer to UR. They just want to get to know you, what you’re passionate about, and if you’re a good fit for the community (as well as whether you’re excited at the idea of joining it). Show that you’re interested in whatever activities you do, emphasize things that might not show on a transcript, and show you’re interested in UR, too.

I was impressed both times at the professional but still very friendly atmosphere UR provides for interviews.

Just want to say good luck  i have my off campus interview with rochester today. what i did to prepare was looked online at some general interview questions and thought over some questions I have. Reading through some other threads I think this will be enough. Good luck!
