Interview

I have my interview coming up at GW in a few weeks. Has anyone done an interview here, and do you have any advice (what questions do they ask, what are they looking for, etc)?

Thanks

This is via my “S” who is sophomore and interviewed on-campus. You will likely be interviewed by only one person from the Admissions Office. My “S” had a senior undergrad student interview him, but likely it will be a staff admissions officer.

He brought a resume and the interviewer looked at his resume for a while before the interview began.

Questions focused on the standard stuff - “Tell me about Yourself”, Tell me about your goals, Tell me about “Why GW”. What are your Strength’s and Weaknesses. Have at least 1 weakness -everyone does. What do you bring that’s unique to the class of 2016?

His interviewer also asked a lot about a resume item that was unique - info withheld. His interview lasted about an hour and 15 min. Most were shorter that day. He also interviewed right after the official GW tour which was good to he had some questions himself to ask - very important.

Most of all -be yourself.

CJ

Yeah, they basically leave it up to you to direct the conversation - try to pin point a unique quality of your application and roll with it, they’ll ask follow up questions so it’s not just you talking. Think of it as a conversation - “if you cant converse with a former student, you wouldnt be able to converse with current students” is the mentallity of the school, so treat it naturally.

as a specific example, i talked about being apart of BOTH the Young republican and Young democrat clubs at my school, and about sports since my alum ran track at our rival school

Thanks everyone, I had my interview yesterday and I believe it went very well. It was with the assistant admissions director and it was extremely casual and conversational. Good luck to everyone else!

How funny, my interview was yesterday too! Mine was at 12:15, maybe i saw you there? hah.

Haha mine was at 4:15, so I most likely didn’t see you unless you did an early tour/ info session. I did the 10am info, 11am tour and then explored the campus until my interview. Very busy and bustling with students as it was their second day of classes!!

Ah, no :\ I was going to go to the 10AM information session, but i contacted one of the Professors in the field I wanted to study and I actually got to have a 1 on 1 conversation with him at 10AM, so I missed the session but got equally as valuable information.

May I ask where you’re located that you are having these interviews? Are they on campus? How did you get interviewed so early in the season? Is it different for out of state people? We were in DC in July but no interviews were even discussed.

Thanks.

The interview is an optional part of the official Application Process.

Follow this link:
https://gwapplication.gwu.edu/login/login.cfm

And create an account.

After completing some steps you will be directed to the “GW Admissions Activity Center”.

Here you can fill out Part 1, Part 2, Your essay of your application. You can also register for Visiting dates (like Info Sessions and Tours in DC), Admissions Events (like the admissions officer coming through your area) and also you can sign up for the Interview.

Interviews started last week, so you can get them at any time starting now!

99% of GW students are out of state, so no it’s not different for out of state. Sometimes you can get an interview in your area if you are lucky though. I would highly suggest going to DC to get the interview if possible.

And Interviews started the last few days of July so unless you were lucky enough to get one of those days, then you are correct: no interviews were even discussed at that time.

we both went on campus to do an interview (i’m assuming), I combined it with a tour and such so that I would have one last chance to solidify my choice before I sent in my ED application.

Thank you.
