I just received Part I of application for Rice in the mail. It said an interview was optional. I am planning on applying to the College of Social Sciences and was wondering how much the interview matters. Is it just a informational interview or is part of admissions based on it?

I highly recommend the interview, even off campus with an alum in your area. Rice grads love their school.

Obviously, your grades, test scores, and extracurriculars are the most important things, but if you have a similar resume with someone else it could give you the edge. I interviewed with a local alum, and he actually majored in what I was thinking of studying, so it was very helpful.

I didn't interview and I got in. I was ranked #1 in the class when I applied, though. In my opinion, I think the interview is more informative than evalutative, if you understand what I'm saying.
