Interview

I just scheduled an interview at Barnard, but I really have no idea what to expect. Any tips? Advice? Anything I should keep in mind? Help!

one more thing-- does anyone know if this interview is a chance for me to get to know Barnard... or the other way around? Should I come with questions or be prepared to be asked questions?

both. come prepared with questions to show that you're interested in the school. however, don't come with dumb questions that can be found online, like class sizes.

my interviewer was a student, and we happened to have things on common, like yearbook, politics, and other interests, so the interview went great. she asked questions ranging from 'what are your strengths/weaknesses?' to 'which movie would you rather see this summer, ____ or ____?' i don't know what it's like to be interviewed by an admin and not a student, but i imagine that the experience is different.

also, follow up with a thank you note, mailed.

Thank you so much... although, I find myself so completely enamored with Barnard that I can't think of anything to ask-- I have been so thrilled with everything I have read up on Barnard, from the website as well as from several books. I'm a tour guide at my school, so I know there is little more annoying than a prospective student who doesn't have any questions, but I really have no idea what I could ask, besides a couple of things about certain extracurriculars I'm interested in... Suggestions? Please? Anything's good, I just need to get the ball rolling...!

Also, this is completely unrelated to interviews, but I'm in a bit of a pickle... see, I took the SAT I in May (not good) and then I took SAT IIs in June, although I only took one (stupid, stupid me. I don't know why I didn't take another). Even if I did do well on that SAT II, I still would have had to take SAT IIs again. So here's my problem: I need to take both SAT I and II, so of course, I am registering October and November. However, I want, more than ANYTHING, to apply early. Is there any way that Barnard will accept my November score?

that's a good idea, to ask about stuff you're interested in...the person might not know the exact answers, but they can point you in the right direction...and it'll show that you're interested.

as for the SATs, i don't know the answer...you might have to call admissions and ask. you couldn't take the SAT and SATII on the same day in october? i know that's a lot of test taking for one day...or, have you considered that instead of taking the SATIIs, take the ACT?

RE questions to ask your interviewer: If it's a student, ask her about her experiences; about advising; about her favorite thing about Barnard and if there was one thing she could change, what would it be? Just some general ideas...

About test taking: I am pretty sure you cannot sub the ACT for SAT II's; You can submit ACT scores instead of SAT's, however. As to the October/November thing, I want to THINK you can do that, but as suggested above, you should call admissions and ask...

Barnard accepts the ACT + writing in lieu of both SAT & SAT II's. My d. did not submit any SATs.

We require the SAT Reasoning Test and two SAT Subject Tests of your choice OR the ACT with writing option.

Thanks so much! I would call Barnard... but I'm afraid of hearing a big fat "no," as silly as that may sound. I know it would be for my best interest to call but I don't want to fret over something I can't change...yet.
