does submitting the duke app for ED by october 19th - the deadline for interviews - make a real difference in the admissions process?

I got in without an interview and know a lot of other people who got in without interviews as well(though we all got in RD). If you can't make the interview deadline don't sweat it. Applying ED shows your inclination to come here anyway.

The interview truly does not matter. My friend here was one of the top few hundred to get in and invited during the spring to visit with the likely letter and he had no interview. I know plenty who got in without an interview.

I got a likely letter without an interview. Duke's alumni base isn't huge in some areas (like mine), so they do the best they can. They are not going to hold you back because you didn't get one.

OTH, If you are offered an interview, you don't want to refuse the opportunity.

wait where/when do these likely letters come, and does everyone that gets in get a likely letter, even ED?? this is gonna drive me crazy now

I don't think they issue likely letters to ED applicants. They don't need to. Likely letters are sent from Mid-Jan to Mid-Feb if I remember correctly.

No- not everyone who gets in gets a likely letter. Many --I'm guessing most-- accepted students do not get such letters.

And they are every bit as accepted as those who do!

The idea is that if you are offered an interview, accept it! If you are not, don't worry about it.
I felt that my interview was a plus, since it gave my application a little more 'personality'.
