Interview

I have not received a request for an interview and I’m not quite sure how the whole interview process works with Barnard. Does Barnard usually give interviews?

I had an alum interview. It was sort of weird though. The woman kept changing the time and she showed up all disheveled and PJs but we had a good conversation. Maybe interviews are closed for 2012 applicants?

hmmm tru dat. were you contacted or did you contact them? do you know if barnard give everyone interviews or is it random?

Well I went on a tour last April and this fall requested an alum interview. I'm sure those who want, get, but I imagine only within deadlines.

You must request the interview, but the process is over now! the deadline was in december!

barnard's my top choice.. i looked for info on the website about the interview and could find non so i wasn't sure what to do.. worried :/ my family will be visiting nyc in a couple weeks, so do you think that i could call, tell them im visiting, and would like to see more of the college and maybe talk to an admissions officer?

...Not if the deadline has passed. It's too late.

Oh don't worry, Barnard doesn't require interviews, its always a good addition but it doesn't make your chances any less if you didn't do it.

If it hasn't passed the deadline, I would recommend setting one up though. I'm pretty sure Barnard will give anyone who wants an interview (who's applying obviously lol) an interview if its within/arranged at the right time.

ps. I'm sorry I haven't gotten back to you about your essays! I've been so busy but from what I've seen so far I think they are great! I'll PM you with more about that after I have fully read all of them.

thanks orange! did you get a chance to read over the essays i pmed you last night?

I have a sister that attends Barnard. Since she is currently a interviewer, I asked her if there was still time to apply for one, she said that the deadline was in December. You can try and appy , but the interview page said that requests made after december are not guaranteed at all. Interviews are made on the basis of location, so you wait and wait until your name is picked up by a near-by person to you. It is weird, because I recently received an interview from Princeton, who goes by the same rules ( I think). As a visitor, you can always request a campus tour ( that is still available, I asked my sister) and you will get to see the school first hand. Hope this is useful! By the way, where are you from?

Orange!

Your right, it doesnt require intervi., but trust me, to have one and for it to go well, is so important in the application. They write about you and I was told( by Princeton interviewer) that it can really push your application. But if you are a strong candidate, it wouldnt affect you not to have one.

lorie2690, you are a huge help thanks! I went to the page after hearing that they are not "guaranteed" but just might happen, however, I couldn't find a link to register. Do you know how to go about this? Barnard is my top choice and I would do anything to go there.. and, after hearing the interview plays a role in decisions.. I'm really worried I won't have that. Cause I think my app needs it and I know I'd make a great impression etc.

I'm from Western New York but I'm taking a trip to Barnard next weekend/Mon/Tues for the tour/info session etc. I'd really like to stop by the admissions office but when I called, they seemed pretty adamant about not speaking to anyone in an "interview-like" fashion. :/ Do you, or your sister, know what else I could possibly do?

Thanks so much for all your help I really appreciate it : )

If, in fact, the admissions people were "adamant" about your not being able to speak to anyone in an "interview-like" fashion, I would advise you to not carry it ANY further with them. You do not want to create the idea in their minds that you, a) did not follow instructions carefully to begin with while applying, or, b) that Barnard is a "second thought" for you. Obviosly, the opposite is true, but you might create that impression if you are not careful.

I would suggest you do the tour and then see if you can make personal contact with a faculty member in an area that interests you (e-mail them before your visit, perhaps) and see if they have time to talk to you about your specific interest in Barnard. My d did this in January of her senior year. She had already had her interview in the fall before. She is a dancer and had planned to take a dance class at Barnard over her interview weekend (we spoke to a dance faculty member). However, she had mono and could not dance. She returned to NYC in January to do an audition for a summer program and, on her own, contacted Barnard and the dance faculty member to whom she had spoken in the fall to see if she could take the class then.

I don't know if that sort of contact gets noted in your admissions file, but it certainly could not hurt. I think, however, that the risk of coming across in a negative way at this very busy time for the admissions staff is too high for you to carry any requests for an interview with them any further.

Hope this helps some!

Best to you!!

Yes, I am not sure, or my sister what else you can do.I mean your background seems good enough! Do not worry, an interview is imporatnat but if you are a good candidate, I doubt the will take the interview in such a negative way. In regard of what Church.....said, shes right, do not hesitate them or give them your name or anything of the sort,. You do not want them to think you left things until the last minute. They probably take that into consideration, and trust me, if you call one time and then another day, and the ssame secretary is in there, she/he will remeber your voice. One time i called regarding my 2006 tax returns, two days later, just in cse, I called again, and the lady was like " did I not speak to you the other day?" I was shocked!
