Sooooo summer is Yale interview months. Has any of you had it yet? Mind's on Wednesday haha....a bit scared since it's my first one....

Ahh that’s exciting though! Have fun and good luck!
If you go onto the SCEA 2014 thread (you should join us!), one friend just had one today but she hasn’t reported back and also, on the recent page of the RD interview advice, JED already had one and he said it was very relaxed.
Haha you can tell I’m on this board wayyy to much. But its fun!
Mine is on August 12th and it’ll be my first one too! :]

Interview month? Don’t you get an interview after you send in the application?

I think you do, but Yale sent out a lot of e-mails so a lot of people whom I know and they all signed up online in the “Yale Appointment Book”. Not sure if this is a new thing haha

JunkerRikert - the Yale on-campus interviews run in the summer (of course, before applications) through the fall, and then there are alumni interviews after you send in your app :]
Of course, if you already have an on-campus interview, then you have less priority to get another interview through an alumni, but if you live close by or they have time, they offer you a second interview

Demi have you prepared anything yet? I haven’t at all haha. I mean, I do know the basic answers and whatnot because I have thought about them for some time but I’m scared that my interviewer would ask a question that I wouldn’t know how to answer and I’m typically not clever enough to come up with something in short notice haha XD

Wait, how’d you know my name was Demi? Lol. Or was that just a coincidence?
I’ve thought about the general idea to what I might answer for certain questions lol! Don’t worry, a little dose of nervousness will keep you on your toes. And they’ll understand you can’t compose a lengthy eloquent answer instantly :] And they will be Yale students, so it’s not as intimidating!
I am sure you will be fine!

Haha I just shortened your user name because I am too lazy to type the whole thing…>.<

My name, however, is not Ice. I wish I were that cool…no pun intended haha

Thanks! And best of luck to you too!

I see, it’s on-campus interview. I guess I’ll have to wait for the local interview after the application.

Haha IceFire, you are great.
I just thought it was funny because not many people get to retyping my username and any abbreviations of it quite right :P

Anyone else had his or her interview yet?

Yeah i had mine in early July. My interviewer was extremely nice and i thought it went extremely well. I can only hope that he thought it went well too lol. Does anyone know what kind of factor the interview plays in the application?

Not a big one. A negative interview isn’t the end-all-be-all of your application and a positive interview won’t guarantee or even hint at admissions. The best you can hope for is that you already have your foot in the door and the good interview just reassures them that that’s the right move.

ALSO, Yale can’t offer interviews to all applicants, which is why it means so little toward your application.

Mine’s on Wednesday as well!

ahh all you guys are interviewing?!??!? I want to, but for some reason I’m soooo scared. It’s not like I haven’t had an interview before, I’ve had them for a spot in youth court and even in competition but I feel like this one actually matters haha.

Good luck everyone!

For those who are interested in knowing how I did…

I just made it in time to the office because dad forced me to print my resume after I was almost in the car which took 20 minutes because the whole new word old word thing and format was messed up and printer had a malfunction. Pretty chaotic morning…

The interview wasn’t too too bad but I was definitely not prepared and it was not an interesting discussion and I made up the whole plot for Fanny and Zooey because I only half finished the book. My phone also started vibrating because my boyfriend called to wish me good luck and he didn’t know when my interview was. Then when she asked me about my extra-curriculars I FORGOT even though that’s my strength because I am involved in basically everything and very disgracefully pulled out my resume and referenced it.
Wasn’t too too too bad, but wasn’t good either.
At least it’s over. OMG. First college interview haha.

…

Ice Fire, I’m going to be completely honest… that interview sounds terrible. Successful applicants are EXPECTED to have great interviews; some have commented that the interview cannot really help you – it can only put you “out of contention,” and I think your interview may have put you out of contention for Yale.

What were the problems?

First of all, I wouldn’t even bring your resume to an interview. Many find resumes annoying in interviews and applications because they are a list of accomplishments rather than something that enables you to make your activities “come alive” and “show your passion”; I tend to agree with them, and I consciously avoided any resume when I applied and interviewed at Yale and other colleges. However, even if you opt to bring a resume, referencing your resume is REALLY POOR form; it makes it seem like you don’t even know what you do or truly care about it.

Second, leaving your phone on is unprofessional. Enough said.

Third, never lie! What if the interviewer knew Franny and Zooey or decided to look at it afterwards on Sparknotes?!?! You’d be dead.

You should DEFINITELY still apply… realistically, however, that interview may have killed Yale for you. And MOST IMPORTANTLY, use this as a learning experience! You need to approach your future interviews with more preparation, composure, and professionalism. At the very least, the worst is over!

Haha yeah I knew it went awful during it too. But oh well. It’s over anyway and I never thought I could get into Yale anyway. Just like you said, I’m using this as a learning experience. Woohoo

My interview today was ok. The interviewer asked some pretty probing questions. I stumbled on a few of them, but the rest went pretty well. I hope.
