how does one obtain an interview? do you have to contact an alumni yourself? or you do have to submit a part of your app a certain date?

Follow the link, let Rice know you are interested in an interview. They will contact someone to interview you. It takes a while but the interviewer will contact you and set up a time and place.

how important are interviews? or is it like at any other university, where alumni interviews do not really matter that much because not everyone can get one?

Interview can help the admissions committee get to you better. However, it is not required. I never interviewed at Rice (since I sent my application late) and I got in.

they are optional, but it really gives them a 2nd look at you. when i had my interview i brought my resume and stuff but she said she wanted to solely write a report to rice about our interview, without know any of my stats. Its a good way to look at an applicant
