Interviewer asks what other colleges I apply to?

If a georgetown interviewer asks me what other colleges I am applying to can I lie?

I am applying to a lot of prestigious universities(most Ivies) and I DO NOT want to give the impression that I am A)prestige whore and B)applying to georgetown only as a lesser alternative to an Ivy.

If I lie, can they find out?

Thanks

They won’t find out.

But why lie? I don’t think Georgetown considers itself inferior to Ivies.

Most Georgetown applicants also apply to Ivy League schools so this would be no surprise to an interviewer. They’ll care more about why you are applying to Georgetown, and your ability to convince them why Georgetown should accept you. You should also be able to put a coherent argument together about why you are applying to the other schools that you are interested in, not only for the interviewer, but also as you work your way throught the application process. The earlier you do this the better applicant you will become for the school you truly want to attend.

My interviewer asked me, and I was actually not expecting it at all… (I’d never done an interview until my Gtown interview) but, I just told her two of the schools I was looking at because in the moment I was really flustered. Keep in mind, I’m not looking at any Ivy Leagues so after I blurted out my two other schools I said that Georgetown was my first choice so I was having a really difficult time finding other schools that I liked just as much and would want to attend which is actually true. So, just tell the truth. Lying is bad… Karma.

Of course they can’t find out, but why would you lie? Interviewers are not robots trained to spew “GEORGETOWN IS THE BEST ONLY GEORGETOWN NO ONE ELSE.” They know kids shop around for colleges and there’s no shame in applying to other top schools. Just make sure you stress how interested you are in Georgetown and try to have some concrete reasons why. My interviewer was shocked when I said Georgetown was my first choice–she said she had a ton of kids say Georgetown is their second or third choice or at the bottom of the list! Why you would say that I cannot imagine, but don’t be those kids.

Just be honest, but I would try to give a short list (not your whole list, just a name 3 or 4 schools) and be sure to mention a state school as a backup
