Interview's affect on admission

Is there any indication if the interview is a factor in admissions (for CIT or college of science)? Would it only help you if you're on the borderline (I feel that between SAT, GPA, extracurriculars, I am well above average)? I know the deadline is Feb 1, so is it a little late now (would give a bad impression possibly or put pressure on the interviewer to rush the report?)

How badly would it have to go to damage my chance of getting in, because I feel like I don't have much to gain and a lot to lose.

My mom went to grad school (architecture) at CMU, and she received a letter (I suppose they send it to all alumni who have a kid who applies) after I applied (I had yet to have my interview) that said applicants were strongly encouraged to have an interview. I contacted my interviewer the day after New Years and I had my interview less than a week later. I’d recommend having the interview, picking an alumnus who is not that recent a graduate (my person could barely fit me in since she was studying for the bar exam), and offering to meet the interviewer closer to their house to maximize the convenience for them.
