interviews and such

ive done a few already for other colleges. they've lasted 1.5 to 2.5 hours, which seems a bit ridiculous. dartmouth being on my top schools list, i guess id like to get sufficient time to talk about myself, what ive done and what not. has anyone done an interview yet? how long was it and did they mention anything about sat's? mmm thanks.

I applied under early decision and was interviewed. My interview lasted a little less than an hour with the alum indeed asking me for my SAT scores. Apparently the alums are only sent the name, address, and telephone number of students they are to interview and no other information.

Mine was about 45 minutes, but I wasn't asked for SAT scores or anything like that. He just wanted to know about my passions (i.e. ecs / school), my favorite and most challenging classes, life story, and biggest weakness.

By the way, my interviewer and I didn't get along at all. He was kind of mean to me and said some inappropiate things. ANYWAY, I still got in...so it must not count for that much. :)

2.5 hours?! Yeesh. My interviews have been around 1 hr, give or take. I haven't done a Dartmouth interview yet.

my interview was like 1.5 hours...kinda long but it went really well.

I did two interviews for Dartmouth when I was a graduate student in Madison, Wis. Courtesies and pleasantries aside, I recall they took slightly less than an hour. One student wanted to keep talking about herself, so I let her talk, and that took up time. There's no way I would have conducted a two hour interview; I'm not a sadist or a masochist.
The only information I got was name, address, and telephone number. I wrote strong recommendations in favor of admitting both students I interviewed, but neither got in. I don't think my opinion mattered too much.

I'd recommend informing the Admissions Office about the inappropriate things that were said. Interviewers represent the College. As an alum, I certainly don't want other alums out there saying inappropriate stuff while interviewing prospective students.

I had a Dartmouth interview that went really, really well. It has to strengthen my application, right? I mean, my interview has to count for something.

I was 20 minutes late (I left 30 minutes earlier than it would have taken me to get there but got lost anyway). My interviewer told me I had 30 minutes left, but it ended up lasting 2 hours lol. It was an interesting conversation, ranging from Dartmouth to politics, Iraq, family, etc.

I had my interview @ Dartmouth and it only lasted for 25 min since the admission officers had a schedule that they do interview every 30 min.

I just had mine and it lasted 1.5 hr... they were really nice...

son had one and it went about ~50 minutes...no discussion of stats.

wish me luck because i have my interview tomorrow. i can't believe it came up so quickly! i have a problem though.. i'm trying to schedule an interview with a duke alum, she contacted me first, but now i can't get a call back. we've been playing phone tag for over two weeks now and now it's almost the deadline (feb.1) for interviews. what should i do?

bchbabe704 - i think the deadline for duke is feb 15, cuz mine is the 5th.

she had left me a message on my machine though that the deadline for her to turn in evaluations was feb.1. i didn't realize you can turn them in after the 1st, hmm... well it's just that she's been out of town all this week (she told me that) so that's why i haven't seen her. i have so much work though this week, should i push for the interview? i really want the interview because i know i can do well... thoughts?

Just got back from my interview. It lasted about 40 minutes. The hardest question was "what has been your best high school experience?" I hesitated for awhile before i finally singled something out.

However, she was very nice. She also said i was easy to talk to and asked good questions :)

i didn't get contacted for an interview yet. Canada here...when should i wait before calling them for an alumni interview? or should i not call?

Is it normal for an interviewr to ask you for your stats?

It really depends. I think some interviewers like to ask, whereas my interviewer never did. My interviewer understood that I go to one of the top high schools in the nation, so he may have assumed that I had the academic qualifications to get in, and wanted to focus on the more subjective areas of my life.

On the form that the interviewers fill out they are supposed to rate you and academic information can be very valuable when comparing you to other applicants. So, I would just expect it as a possible question, but if they don't ask you, don't freak out!

I agree with Tree Hugger. During my interview for Dartmouth, she did ask me my stats only because she had no other information about me. I wouldn't fret if they do or don't ask you about your stats but you better know them! She asked me all the SAT IIs I took and what I scored on all of them and I really had to think and make sure I got them all. Keep in mind though to tell them something they don't know on the applications. For example, since I've submitted my application I've been on a study tour in the Caribbean and I was nominated as the valedictorian. My interviewer was all excited when I told her that. Just relax and you'll be fine. Appeal to them though, I live in Cali and we are not conservative here at all, at least by East Coast standards. Espeically for female interviewers, they will notice what you are wearing, I think that is extremely important because it is a first impression. I think though that was the only time in January I've ever worn my mother's shoes and blouse buttoned but to the top! I was so hot! But I had a fancy pantsuit on, you can never go wrong with dressing nice and being overly conservative, especially with an East Coast school. If your interviewing for USC though, if you wear sandals, clean pants, and a USC shirt, they will think you are just right! :)
