I have mine coming up. It is supposedly not evaluative but who knows. I have a couple questions.

What to wear? (I'm a guy)
What to bring?
What to say?
What to not say?
What questions will be asked?
etc etc

Thanks

Take a look at these pages – all freely available on the alumni section of Cornell’s web site – that give advice to alumni representatives who do contact sessions with applicants. They will give you an idea of what’s going to happen.

Basically, the alumni representative’s main goals are 1) to obtain useful information from you that didn’t find its way into your application and 2) to sell Cornell. If there isn’t anything special that you want Cornell to know and if you are already familiar with Cornell and sold on going there, you will likely have a very dull contact session. But that won’t count against you.

As for what to wear: a warm coat. Alumni often conduct these sessions in coffee shops, and if it’s noisy in the coffee shop, it may be necessary to go to the outdoor tables even if it’s freezing.

D1 used to bring a resume with her for each interview. It helps interviewer to remember you when they are writing the report.

What to wear - it depends where the interview is taken place. If it’s not at someone’s office, a nice shirt, khaki (or dark clean jeans) with a pair of loafers would be fine. I personally dislike sneakers on anyone outside of gym, but many kids do wear them.

Be yourself. Have a point of view, even when it comes to politics or religion. I have just advised D1 not to push it if the interviewer has a different point of view. D1 had her Cornell interview at her school, where they had over 10+ interviewers and they interviewed everyone from our county who applied to Cornell in one day. She said by far it was one of the most pleasant and easiest interviews.

My interview was extremely casual, it was in a starbucks. i wore just some slacks and a button up with no tie. My interviewer seemed more nervous than me…I don’t remember bringing anything other than a resume.

is it true that these “interviews” are for highly qualified students only or is it by random?

I’m pretty sure it’s by random or whoever they can do in your region…i wish it were only for highly qualified :P.
