Interviews for Internationals

guys for all those who dont know, i live in calcutta india. i wanna know if i can get an interview from harvard, mit, yale, princeton, dartsmouth, and so on.

so can i get an interview here at calcutta? in person would be better, but if not available skype or phone would do.

help me plz. i need to prepare.

You can’t “prepare” for an interview. Interviews are just like conversations. Interviews for those would depend on whether or not those schools have alumni based in Calcutta and whether you make their shortlist.

i didnt mean i wanted to prepare for the interview itself. i meant i need to prepare for whatever is coming, whether it would be a skype call or a phone call or a personal one. the interview i can manage.

Hi akashdip! I’m Brazilian and I had an on-campus interview at Yale. I was also nervous, but actually all those advices about just being casual and facing it like a normal conversation were totally right! The interviewer was really young (he had just graduated and become an admissions officer) and the interview went -> extremely <- well until the minute I started thinking.

I mean, realizing you’re being interviewed in the university of your dreams can be really scarry. Before I began to freak out, we talked about many many things that weren’t even in the list I had previously prepared with “my strengths, accomplishments and interesting facts about me”. You can only prepare for three things, in my opinion: 1) Have a basic idea of what is going on in the world (not that it mattered in mine, but it could easily have) 2) Research interesting and different(!!!) things to ask specifically about the university and NEVER say “I have no other things to ask, I did a lot of research” or anything of that kind!!! (I sort of did)

Don’t think there’s a right answer: and if there is, it is certainly not in CollegeConfidential’s threads! I regret until today not answering the “Why do you want to go to Yale” the way I wanted to. I had a funny story, and instead I went on with all catchy answers the officer probably hears everyday… ugh

Oh and 3) think of reasons why you want to major in the area you chose

Good luck :)

hello rio. hope you make it to yale:)

1 i think i do know more or less;)

2 ill think of some interesting questions and answers for the interviewer:rolleyes:

3 well im all for astrophysics and i definitely think i can come up with all sorts of answers for questions related to choosing it:)

thanks:D

and welcome to college confidential :)

I had my mit interview last year it was horrible. I had it in Delhi. The interview was tougher than the interview i had at my KVPY final round. I went in expecting conversation as i had been told but he conducted it like some job interview or something. He was middle aged and thought too high of himself. He was asking me the same questions that were present on the mit application and when i gave him the same answers i had written in my application he said i was giving answers as if i had prepared them in advance(huge surprise :stuck_out_tongue: ). He was super pessimistic about everything. He didnt spare any chance to make me uncomfortable. I remember one question very well, he asked me if liked working in groups i said yes working in groups is fun. Then he asked me did i work in groups often to which i replied no, with a snug smile he retorted see you are contradicting yourself. I asked how, he replied you told me you like working in groups and now you say you dont work in groups often. I told him i am preparing for iit-jee at kota there is not much scope for working in groups. To which he replied if one truly likes something they find a way to do it. I felt like punching him in the face and leaving. Also he asked me about one thing i really cared about and i replied my Mother to which he later told me i can see that your ability to reason has been clouded by your love for your mother.

Before this mit was my dream school now i think less highly of it.

So finally where did u end up going last year?

P.s What was the name of ur EC?

IIT

The name of my EC was Madhusudan Sarda

I had the same EC this year but he didn’t reply to my mail and I asked MIT for a change. Whew. But the new one hasn’t replied yet too. So ■■■.

where did the interview take place? and do they provide interview here in calcutta? plz plz tell n0madMIT

I mentioned it was in Delhi. They have ec’s across many cities. You can contact your assigned ec he/she may help you. It is not mandatory to have an interview. If you are not able to travel to another city to give the interview they understand. They originally assigned me to Beryl Nelson, she is in hyderabad. As i was going to delhi to give my sat i asked for a change and was assigned Mr. Sarda

ok thanks:)
