I always assumed that invitations for interviews were something that came up after applications were submitted as part of the decision process. However I see lots of threads where interviews were arranged by students before they submitted an application. I guess I should have read each web site more carefully. I know UC doesn't do interviews. I also applied to Reed, NYU, Puget Sound, Lewis & Clarke and Occidental.

Do schools invite students for interviews after they receive the application but before they make their admission decisions, or are students supposed to arrange the interviews themselves before they apply?

It seems that very selective universities require or recommend interviews, selective universities may or may not require or offer then, and other universities don’t offer them at all other than to possibly meet at a college fair. Each school is different, so you really need to read the website of each college. Some schools offer the opportunity for an interview, but don’t require it, and other schools consider the interview an important part of the application. Other schools offer interviews, but they serve more the purpose of answering questions and sharing information about the university.

Even if interviews are required, they are still generally something that you have to schedule yourself. A few schools might request an interview after an application but like Snowflake said, you have to look at each school. A lot depends on your personal situation. My son was homeschooled so he took advantage of interview opportunities whenever he could.
