which schools offer interviews out of these: uva, sarah lawrence, bu, washington & lee, nyu, colgate.
and how do you get an interview, are you contacted or do you contact them?

i know for wash&lee i must contact a rep and ask for one.

how important is it to interview at these schools?

There are two types of interviews, alumni interviews and ones done at the college. If the college has alumni interviews, they will contact you. If you visit the college, you can request an interview there.

Not all interviews are evaluative. They can be just informational for your benefit. Certainly taking an interview is a good way to show interest in the college, which is particularly important at some colleges. If you are interested in interviews, email/call them.

Read the colleges' web sites to find out about interviews or e-mail or call their admissions offices. Don't take the risk of relying on anonymous, possibly uninformed strangers' advice on something so important to your future.

From the Fiske Guide that just happens to be sitting here: UVA - campus interview, optional and informational, Sarah Lawrence - campus interview recommended and evaluative, Washington and Lee - campus and alumni interviews recommended, evaluative, Boston University - alumni interviews are optional and informational.

My advice is to check further, as well. Our experience has been that even when some of the guide books call an interview optional or informational, that they can be considered a factor in some cases.

I didn't know that Fiske even had that. If you want an alumni interview from BU, you will have to request it. They didn't mention it was available in a case last year.

If you are going for a campus visit, schedule any campus interview in advance.

I don't know about the other schools, but NYU doesn't offer interviews. From their website:
[quote]
Personal interviews generally are not part of our admissions process. Because of the high volume of applicants and visitors to NYU, we are unable to accomodate requests for personal interviews.

As far as Sarah Lawrence, they highly recommend it. Students @ SLC have conferences with all of their teachers every week. Therefore, SLC wants to know how well you communicate and what your personality is like. Personality and character is a large part of the admission process, since the school wants to see if you will fit with the SLC culture.

I had an interview with an alumnus of the school and it was very informal. We just talked! She hardly asked me any questions . . .
