I recently applied to WashU RD, and I was just wondering whether or not I should request an interview. I’ve done my research on WashU (which is why I chose to apply there), so what’s the purpose of an interview? Is the purpose for the university to learn about me, or for me to learn about the university? If it is the latter then I’m not overly interested since I am confident with my knowledge of WashU. Obviously if an interview increases admittance chance then I would be interested, or if it would add an integral, personal layer to my application. If it is largely unnecessary, ineffective, or just for me to learn about the school then I would not really be interested. I look on WashU’s FAQs and the only concrete information I found was that it is not required. I’ve heard various sources support each way, so should I request an interview? I’m 3/4 of the way done with my applications, so if there isn’t a true need to interview I would rather not.
Hi Trapnumen, from your earlier chance me thread, you were debating an interview back then as well. Here’s how I see it, you should interview at all schools you are very serious about whether that interview is mandatory or optional, with an an alum or admissions counselor. Why? It shows interest and excitement for a school. It shows you are willing to take time from your busy schedule to do it because you are invested in your effort. It will give the school an opportunity to know you in a way that is different from you on paper in your application. And yes, it does give you a chance to ask your own questions. Also, fringe benefit - life experience! You become better at interviews the more you do them. Ironic thing happened to my D - after about 5 optional interviews that she did, a school invited her for an interview for a major scholarship! She was at an advantage as she prepared for it! But, all of this advice will only make sense if you have the desire and self - motivation to do a Wash u or any other interview.
Thank you! I just wasn’t sure (especially for WashU since their interview process can be with an alumni or with a parent of a student, and I wasn’t sure how informative the latter would be). I think I will request an interview, I just didn’t know if it would be necessary given that I feel confident in my knowledge of WashU.
