Interviews

Are Penn interviews used for the admissions process in any way? or is it just a way to gain more information on the school? For all of those who had an interview, would you recommend it?

granted to legacy candidates only. Do you qualify? I'd recommend one IF you are applying ED.

no...i am not legacy..I may do ED...but I am not sure....

Penn does random interviews. I am not sure how random they are though.

You can ask for an interview...it just depends on how many willing alumni live in your area. I did one...nailed it. They can put a "good context" on your application (that's straight from the horse's mouth, now).

do you think i am going to have to request? should I start contacting them to ensure that I get one?

Didn't have an interview, got in ED. Can't imagine the interview has much to do with the admission process...

I'm pretty sure interviews are just there if you're basically "on the fence". So a good interview could give you taht little extra push. I wouldnt worry about it tho..I'm not legacy and was contacted for an interview. Mine was really casual and we were just talking about random things, so dont be stressed out over it.

so they contact you? you dont contact them?

correct. I am sure you can maintain contact w/ admissions. Good luck.

no one contacted me and i still got in RD. i don't think it is that big of a deal. if they want more info, they would probably just ask. still though, if you get one do it for sure.

I have a friend who does interviews for Penn. It is my impression that although not everyone gets an interview (I think that for non-legacies about half do), it can be a tip factor either way if you are one of those people that the interviewer really goes to bat for or conversely, if they have something negative to say. Although Penn may not weight the interview as heavily as other factors, the interviews are categorized as evaluating, NOT just informational, which means if you get called for one you should still do your best to come in prepared to ask intelligent questions, talk about your own interests why you want to go to Penn, and more.

If Penn is your first choice school, a good thing to do would be to set up your first interview elsewhere. And even if you normally think of yourself as a verbal, expressive person, being in an interview situation is something much different than saying whatever is on your mind, therefore, doing a practice or mock interview at home is also a great idea. Most interviewers try to make you feel very comfortable, genuinely like talking to young adults and want to help you get to know their school better.

If someone calls you for an interview you should definitely do it. Don't worry if you don't get called though- a lot of people get in without one.

Penn interviews are random I think.
Don't refuse an interview if someone calls, but don't worry about it either. I got in with a >terrible< interview.
