Interviews

How important are interviews at Barnard? I am planning on having one before I apply, and I am wondering if it really impacts the application.

Also, if any girls have already had a Barnard interview, I would greatly appreciate if you share your experience with it.

I didn't interview, but a friend of mine does them now. They're supposed to be very low stress--talk about your classes, extracurriculars, what you do during the summers, and why you're interested in Barnard. And, of course, answer any questions you have.

She says that mostly, the interview can only help you. As long as you don't say something completely stupid, that is. E.g. "I want to go to Barnard because I can't think when there's a cute boy in the room." Just be honest and your (smart) self.

My D enjoyed her Barnard interview the most of any. The interviewer herself was very impressive and, according to my D, the conversation between the two was wide-ranging, informal, and interesting. If the interview had been the deciding factor, my D would have gone to Barnard.

Did she have a student, alum, or admissions interview?

My daughter had a similar experience. Barnard was the first school we visited. The tour guide was terrific, followed by a low stress, fun and supportive interview. When it came to making a decision between Washington University, Northwestern and University of Washington Honor's Program, Barnard came out of top.

Mine had a recent alumni interviewer. She was in the second year of law school now, iirc. Had worked a year or two in between.

bump
I just received an email from the admissions officer for my region, and I think I'll be interviewing with her next weekend. Any other advice on what to expect?

Just be prepared to answer why you like Barnard with some intelligent answers. Read some material before going in.

Briefly review what you'd like to touch on during the interview and why these things are important to you.

Be composed and enthusiastic. And good luck.

I interviwed with an admissions officer and just really talked about what I'd done in high school and why I liked Barnard.
