Am an international applicant from India, got a 670 in CR 780 in math, SATII-790 chem, 780 physics and 760 math level2( have a couple of decent EC's as well)

I plan to apply to Cornell this fall for the engineering program, but the thing is I am unable to decide whether to apply ED with my present scores(which are atrocious)-since the scores of my October sat(i plan to retake the sat1) will be out only by the 29th of October, and that's just 2 days before the ED deadline, plus i need financial aid(they have a scholarship especially for Indians),

OR i apply RD after i get my SAT score(which will hopefully be better!) analyze my chances and then apply?
what say?
According to the stats and Cornell's website, once has a better chance ED( not sure if that's applicable to internationals too)

"Because enthusiasm for Cornell is considered a plus, early decision applicants stand a better chance of gaining admission."

Cornell University Undergraduate Admissions Office - HOW TO APPLY

but then I read this thread,

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/cornell-university/960559-cornell-early-decision-misconception.html

What if I gt in ED ( fat chances) and they don't give me aid? will i still have to go?( my parents annual income is below $60,000)

Please help me decide, any help would be highly appreciated!

thanks in advance!
:)

BLANKET STATEMENT FROM CORNELL FINAID. Don’t ask me for source. look it up online. under 60k you will pay next to nothing?

careful though, income is only half of it. if your parents have a lot of assets or you have assets under your name, you could get equally screwed.

I had 640CR 720M (710W). 750 Phy, 760 MathOne. also applied CoE ED (from Canada).

EC’s and essays definitely pushed me though. probably why I got in actually.

whats wrong with applying after your Oct scores come out? I submitted the common app at 2230 on Nov 1st.

the ED thing is “I heard this” and “but this clearly means this” or “inferred from this”. Not having a definite answer on this, you shouldn’t worry about it too much and go for either ED or RD. Spending time on essay is definitely worth it. If anything, the readiness of those could help you decide.

FA is a legit reason to opt out of ED acceptance, but you have to basically prove why you can’t pay. I’ve never heard of ugly stories like this where ED students got screwed financially though here at Cornell…

International students are treated differently when it comes to FA. Call Cornell and speak with someone in admission and FA office. It is summer and it is probably not as busy for them. If they do not give you enough aid, you will not have to go. What gets to be difficult is if they think it´s enough and you do not. As an example, they may require your parents to borrow more money than they are willing to do, or you to contribute more through work study, or not give you any travel money back home.

If I remember correctly, Cornell will take your Oct test scores for ED. Your scores are pretty good, I am not sure if it´s necessary for you to do re-take.

thanks for the comprehensive and detailed replies,
Does applying ED increase ones chances of getting in? ( please read the links)

I’ve read those links
nobody knows for sure. That’s why I suggest you try to ignore “the chances”.
This whole ED debate fuels buyer’s regret.
Gets in ED Awww…wish I had applied somewhere else.
Gets in ED I guess applying ED did help me
Gets waitlisted/rejected ED Awww… and they told me it was easier in ED
Gets waitlisted/rejected ED Huh… I guess they were right about ED being competitive
Gets in RD Pfft… I’m so good I got in RD. glad I didn’t apply ED
Gets rejected RD Awww… shoulda applied ED. Better chances I hear
How do any of these OPINIONS help you? Anything anyone tells you will begin with the words “I feel that ED…” Just stop that nonsense… don’t let it become a placebo plz.
