If any of you have already applied to colleges and gotten Financial Aid (need based or merit) could you please tell me where? If it's not a problem, could you also tell me how much you got?

Thanks a lot!

I am not international but I can tell you that top schools(e.g. HYPM) and top LACS(williams, Amherst..) give need based aid.

I applied to Cornell College in Iowa. (the non-Ivy) They gave me a "merit" scholarship. "Minimum Eligibility Criteria - Contribution to campus diversity" for the Frank Armstrong scholarship. Wei, practically guaranteed for intels. http://www.cornellcollege.edu/financial_assistance/academic.shtml

I also applied to Beloit College in Wisconsin.

Funding is available for international students, however we do limit our support to no more than 40 to 50% of our direct costs (tuition, fees, room and board). This level of support includes both scholarship and work opportunity on campus.
Because funding for international students is limited and competitive, we recommend that all application materials be complete by October 15 (for Spring term) or January 15 (for Fall term).

Based on the student's need and also upon the student's academic merit, we will then make a decision as to how much we are willing and able to fund the student. Thus, the determination to award aid to a given student will be based upon demonstrated "need," but the dollar amount awarded will be determined by how strong the applicant is academically. Approximately 75% of international students attending Beloit receive some financial assistance from the College.

In addition, each year we award up to four World Affairs Center (WAC) Scholarships. These scholarships can range up to full tuition, depending upon the student's need. As you can imagine, competition for these scholarships is very keen. There is no special application that a student needs to fill out to be considered for these WAC scholarships. Eligible candidates will be selected during the application reading process. Since WAC scholarship decisions are made in early February, applicants who wish to be considered for the scholarships must have their application material complete by the 15th of January at the latest. Keep in mind that, although the WAC scholarships can cover full tuition, other expenses such as room, board, books, supplies, personal expenses, and travel would not be covered. Beloit College does not offer any "full-ride" scholarships covering the full cost of attendance.

I didn't get the WAC scholarship :( but I got substantial merit scholarship and work opportunity money. About 40% or so.

Vassar also gives internationals great aid. And it's completely need-based.

I got in Oberlin ED2 (just received the package yesterday) but my finaid is a little bit tricky >< they practically give me everything (work, loan, grant combined) but the loan is 3000$/year => i dont want to graduate with 12000$ weighing down my shoulders, coz im more than sure that my intended career is never a lucrative one :(( any suggesttion plz? can I negotiate?

Thanks for replying!

IHS - thanks, i've been looking at LACs and a pretty large number of them seems to offer financial aid...

IzzyJ and nhyn - congratulations! i'm really glad you got accepted!

izzy, it's great that you got into college with a merit scholarship. i'll look at the places you applied to.

nhyn, i went to oberlin's website a couple of days ago when I was looking at LACs. its awsome that you got in. from what i read, it seems like they offer substancial financial aid. anyway, its great that they gave you almost everything! as for the loan, i don't think i can really help you, but there might be a way you could pay it while you're still in college...

thank you greendayfan :D (if u're truly a fan then congrats, yr band has just won a Grammy! :D) theres probably no way i can pay it while in college :( maybe ill just ask them T_T
r u applying this year or next? if youre applying this year isnt it too late to ask about schools with finaid? but if youre a junior u can pm me, i can help u out (being a intel with financial need forced me to read a lot!) :D

nhyn... basically I think all schools offer loans to international students unless it's Pton or some similar calibre schools. Yep, I got into Kenyon and they met all my needs except for the similar USD 3000 loan. But then again, you are supposed to repay the loan [bold]after[/bold] you graduate from college, not when you are in college. And I suppose one must bear some responsibility when it comes to financing your own college education right? :p

Getting 92% paid isn't bad. Were you to get almost any job from the USA of other parts of the Western world, paying 12k is a piece of cake. I'm pretty sure they won't re-negotiate, if your main reason is that you feel unconfortable with taking a small loan since average American elite LAC graduates probably take much more loan.

thanks guys..its maybe because im comparing it with the package from another school i got in EA TT they gave me everything, w/o loan TT
Teemu: thats the problem, coz im going back to my country for work :D and it is not part of the western world :D
anyway, thanks guys :) to think about it, im probably much more lucky than many others, so i should not be too greedy right?^^

wow what's that EA sch?

just out of curiosity, nhyn, can you reveal the name of this generous EA school? :)

i applied to Drew and got a %50 scholarship. OWU also gave me 82%. IIT 9000 and eligible for Camras scholarship.

Williams, Williams, Williams.

i wud also like to know waht school gave u so much money EA nhyn... if u dont mind telling me of course

btw, thanx - green day is a really cool band!! their music is awsome!!! i would luv to see them perform live some day...

For anyone who is afraid about paying back their loans after graduation, let me point out that virtually every top LAC and university have a loan forgiveness clause for international students in the loan contract, stating that the loan will be forgiven should the student decide to go and work in the developing world.

for some very personal and ridiculous reasons ill have to keep that EA school a secret but I can tell u that its also a top LAC (LAC sure is generous ^^)
wow thanks bogororo! ill ask Oberlin about that! :D

EA college of Nhyn is Whitman College

She is waitlisted for the international scholarship... she is afraid that if we apply she will not get the scholarship!!

Don't be afraid... I wont apply

hix why did you say that Alexandria when Whitman doesnt even have an EA program?^^'

I got Yale (and attending), Middlebury, Mount Holyoke, Colgate and Macalester.

I got Illinois Wesleyan (attending, 12000 per year) and Truman State (1500 per year).
