Intramural Sports at Berkeley

It seems like the kind of thing you don't need experience for-- how true is that? Seriously, if you absolutely suck but really want to play soccer, will you find some sort of team? How serious are intramural sports? Just tell me anything you know about them, especially about the soccer teams.

I'm wondering the same thing.

Some sports are more competitive than others, but ultimately, skill level doesn't matter. Sports such as softball and ultimate frisbee have lots of newbies running around, just having a good time. Basketball, flag football, and soccer have more of those quasi-jocks who take it pretty seriously, but it's generally not too bad.

If you just want to join by yourself, the league often fields a "free agent" team made up of individuals who just want to play, but more often than not, you want to create a team of your own (dorm, club, etc) then sign up.

I want to play basketball! Sounds like fun :)

Even if you suck at soccer, if you start playing as a freshman and get into it, you'll be almost decent by the time you graduate.

You can also take PE classes in sports like soccer, hoops and tennis. I learned tennis through PE classes at Cal.

I think there is a B-league in soccer, you could join that if your soccer skills aren't very sharp. Coed is less competitive.

Also, look into recreational pick-up games in parks around you all over town. Skill levels range.

Is the elementary tennis course usually taken by students who do not know how to play tennis?

i wanna play soccer too

How about for people who played in high school but are not good enough for intercollegiate?

The A/Comp intramural league is for you sarah. I'm not sure if there is a comp coed league too, or just comp A men, my info is dated.

Also, Cal has great soccer programs, both Ms and Ws, go out with some friends and support the teams at Edwards Field on campus for a study break.

Basically, you can pick up any sport you like at Cal, even if you're a complete beginner, and if you like it and play it through college you'll be good at it. I learned tennis and windsurfing from scratch at Cal and played comp IM soccer throughout.

Check out Cal Adventures for other sports like rock climbing, then there is skiing as well.

dammn windsurfing sounds awesome. are there any ice rinks close to campus with IM or club hockey?

yep, Berkeley Iceland is a few blocks from campus. The Cal hockey club plays there, if you're decent you can compete for Cal or at least get smoe ice time slapping the puck around.

does anyone noe anything about intermural football? i played in high school, and i may want to walk on and doo scout offense or something. but the commitment is way 2 much for such a task...is the intermural/flag version time consuming?

IM FB? not at all, you just show up and play for an hour once or twice a week. Not time consuming at all, more like a great release and the best way to keep in shape.

does cal have intermural rowing?

No, however, there is the lightweight rowing sports club. i was in it last season, and the practices were very demanding. however, we won all the competition :D (against heavyweights)

Cal is the top rowing school in the US, by a longshot. Same with rugby.

what are the prizes if your team wins an intramural sport?

Your overall GPA goes up 0.25 points.

J/K, ;) you get a T-Shirt and get to show off on campus.

no trophy???
