Intramurals and Marching Band

Just curious about these to extra-curr. activities...

Are intramurals very active, or just occassional games some students engage in?

Also, is marching band by audition only or open? How often do they practice?

Looking for good school spirit in a diverse, open environment with lots to keep one busy outside of just studying. Does Carnegie Melon fit that bill, especially in regards to the aforementioned activities?

T

They are both great ways to have fun and are mostly for pure enjoyment.

IM leagues mostly consist of friend groups or organizations that play that sport for fun. Aka some members of the team don’t even know the sport they’re playing and were just dragged in by their friends :)

Kiltie Band is one of the greatest communities on campus, in my opinion. They’re just always having and playing for fun. The entry is open for everyone, unless you want to be first chair in some section, then you might have to audition. Kiltie Band meets 2 times a week: usually Mondays and Thursdays in late afternoon (5-6ish). During the football season (beginning of fall semester) there is a game almost every saturday, so the band comes out then too.

You will not be bored, stuck in your dorm room, at CMU (unless you really want to). There are plently things to do and easily get involved in. If you want more challenging music/sports try AUO and club sports. AUO has the same policy as Kilties in regards to admission (meet once a week on Sundays for 3 hoursish?) but club you have to try out (since you compete with other schools)
Definitely look into Buggy, it is something you’ve never imagined before haha greek life, clubs in your major or outside your major…The list goes on

Does the Kiltie Band have a colour guard as well?

^ yes, but i think they only practice during football season and not during concert band season

Kiltie Band requires no auditions for any instrument or any position, at all. You do not need to know how to march. You do not even know how to play an instrument, you can learn as you go and wing it. There are absolutely no restrictions on who can join (except, I think, School of Music students can’t join? I’m not sure), so long as you make the proper time commitment (70% of all practices, and 100% of all games unless specifically excused by the director). Kiltie is one of my absolute all-time favorite activities here at CMU, I wouldn’t quit it for the world!

However, if your high school had an actual marching band, this is nothing like it. Kiltie is a very loose and fun environment, which means we focus less on actually being able to march and more on being loud.
