Intramurals at Northwestern

How popular are intramural sports and which ones are the most popular? How do they work, are they competitive? Are the teams mostly from frats and sororites or do groups of friends make teams? I'm really interested and would like to learn how intramurals work because I really have no idea.

IMs are pretty big. They are schoolwide with varying leagues, some co-ed and some all guys (these are pretty serious, but not as serious as club sports). Most residential colleges have teams for every sport, as do fraternities (some have multiple teams). Any group of friends can register for IM sports under any name, dorm-affiliated or not. There is no "popular" sport, they rotate on a quarterly basis: dodgeball/volleyball, basketball/floor hockey, softball/ultimate frisbee.

Yep - that pretty much summarizes it.

and soccer!

IMs are really fun. i played some games with a coed team during the winter--ours was pretty chill and usually a nice study break.

Oops, forgot soccer in the spring, sorry!

Who knew that a cheap T-shirt stating Fall, Winter, Spring [year]/volleyball, floor hockey, softball, etc. champs would mean so much for the competitors?

Is there football in the fall too?

k&s, the thrill of competition is unlike any other. i cant wait to do intramurals in college, it will be a blast!

ridewitbd24 - I saw it from both sides - as a competitor (with my dorm chums and later my fraternity brothers) and as a ref.

My favorite was floor hockey - it got pretty rough out there, haha (and you're right, it's a total blast).

any lacrosse going down??

Haha, I guess I forgot another one, flag football is in the fall too. There is club lacrosse but no IM lacrosse.

yeah i know a lot of girls who do club lacrosse. it looks like a lot of fun. there are also tons of club sports that you dont need to have much experience to do (ie. crew, etc)

how intense is men's club lacrosse? is the practice schedule really grueling?
