Intranet

my friend who is a sophmore told me that the download quota is rediculous stupid at 2gb/month. I'm big into downloading all kinds of ****, especially new trance every week. 2 Qs...how good is the intranet and how expensive is extra internet bandwith? (he didn't know...thought like $2/gb or something though)

I've never heard of bandwidth quotas...if that is true than that sucks. I've even heard of quite a few schools nowadays giving every student a Napster account (to discourage P2P music sharing). I could blow through 2 GB in no time...

is shareware like limewire illegal in the US? I've got a bad habit of downloading songs and software off limewire.

How do they enforce it? each student has to login into a server in order to get access to the internet?

inter/intranet quality is good, the network has only been down 2 or 3 times, and only for a matter of hours

there is a hub on DC++ that is an intracampus only network. as there is no bandwidth charge for intranetwork traffic, nothing on the network counts against your bandwidth. DC++ has all the pirated movies, music, and programs you could want.

bandwidth charge $1.50 per GB over the 2GB limit for extranetwork traffic

every student has a free napster account. you can't take the music off your PC, but it's still sweet. 1.5million songs for free covers most of the music you could want, anything from miles davis to britney spears. even many small time bands are on there.

they enforce the network by making you register your IP address or router's IP address if you want to access "ResNet" (i.e. get on the internet) which is the internet provider/portal/network/whatever i'm supposed to call it.

However, the limit is only in dorm rooms. Go download off the wireless in the library and there's no charge. Doesn't even matter though, because of DC++, which is garunteed no charge.

I was worried about this fee as well.
So how does the DC++ work? And is it just as extensive as Torrents/Limewire?
thanks

DC++ has a a poopload of cornell students on it. stuff is very readily available. Most of your downloading can come from DC++ which means you will not worry about bandwidth for downloading. I'm a fairly heavy internet user, and I usually only go a couple GBs over. The big culprit is google image search, or watching online flash videos, because google pre-loads the full size images evidently. Seriously guys, don't worry, it's not a crutch, you'll end up paying maybe a few dollars a month as long as you stick to DC++ which has almost everything. I wanted an obscure, to the average college student, trumpet sonata, the one by Kent Kennan, and I found it on DC++ first try.
