It was only about a month ago that I didn't really know much about investment banking, but recently I've come to notice that it might be a very possible career path for me.

In finding out about investment banking it would have been extremely helpful if there had been an intro thread about IBanking on this discussion board. It would be great if someone who knows a bit more about this issue could do a proper intro-thread. You know, the pay, the hours, the target schools, the fact that the major doesn't really matter, the career path from analyst to MD (and what their rough role is), the exit opportunities (and their explanations, I didn't know what private equity, venture capital or hedge funds meant in practice) etc. And of course the common abbreviations used, such as BB, GS, MS etc.

If someone does take the time to do this, thanks a bunch. I would, but I obviously don't yet have the necessary expertise for doing it.

What Watson2Holmes said was crude but true. You have to be aggressive and take the initative to find information on your own, ESPECIALLY in Wall Street. I suggest you start by going onto Wall Street Oasis they helped me alot with finding information about banking, etc. And one other thing, if you are thinking about IB solely for the money think again. Wall Street is taking massive losses, just look at Bear Sterns but you should probably find this information on your so just use Google and talk with some bankers; they were also very helpful and informative.

Why is everyone being so mean? I think that posting this thread is a method of getting information. The silly thing would be for this thread to be Fin-IB's sole method . So, enough with the cutthroat responses; if you've got nothing productive to say, don't say it - and if you do, please be courteous. Internet posts should not be used to form value judgments.

The appropriate method for getting the basic information you seek is to use the search function. Do NOT start a new thread asking questions which have been answered 400 times already.

It takes many hours of reading to actually get a basic understanding of what IB is all about. Nobody can do that reading for you so don't bother asking.

By the way, if you go to wallstreetoasis they have better info, and actually an intro page.
