I'm going to be a freshman at ILR next semester and I was wondering if anyone out there had advice for me. Intro to Microeconomics and Intro to Macroeconomics are both introductory requirements for ILR, and I am thinking about taking macro before micro because of better scheduling and available professors, etc. Does anyone have thoughts on this? I know ILR "recommends" taking micro first, but would it really make a difference if I took macro instead?

Not really. Micro tends to be a prerequisite for more things though.

Also, avoid Burkhauser if you want to actually learn something/get a good grade.

yeah! i read that he wasn’t good. I want to take macro with kyle (any opinions?) this fall and then maybe get micro done online over winter break. my thought process is that if i am home and doing nothing, i will have the time to dedicate to micro which seems harder to succeed in based on professor ratings and material itself

Micro really isn’t hard, but that said neither Wissink nor Burkhauser is that great (I had Burkhauser as well). Looking back, I’d definitely have tried to take micro over the winter just so I could’ve condensed a whole semester’s worth of busywork and other BS into 3 weeks.

ah! thanks ilr2013, i wanted to hear what anyone with experience thought of my plan. as of now i want to take these classes for the fall:
-intro to macro
-continuing french (level depends on how i do on the SAT subject test)
-intro to US labor history
-History of the Modern Middle East: Nineteenth to Twentieth Centuries (for the Cultural Perspectives requirement)
-and a PE class

then, intro to micro over the winter.

(i’m placing out of one of the fr writing seminars with an AP exam, so I’ll take the other one second semester)
any opinions on all this? too much, too little, just right? thanks!!

I think taking micro first is ideal, but it really doesn’t matter. I actually thought Wissink was a fantastic instructor, but I had her for a higher level Econ class, not intro.

Wissink makes topics that are really easy to grasp just extremely boring and tedious, this is her course page for micro this semester. decide for yourself

[intro micro wissink](http://www.arts.cornell.edu/econ/wissink/econ1110jpw/)

Worried94, that schedule looks pretty standard. you might not want to take two intense history classes your very first semester though, maybe take ob instead of labor history?

good idea!

I just looked at a couple of Wissink’s slides and I personally see nothing wrong with them. I will note that they seem to be at a somewhat higher level than my AP class. That said, I think Wissink is trying to prepare students for upper level Econ courses. If you are terminal at the intro level, I can see how it might be a bit much.
