I've heard that Intro to Statistics at UCLA Extention can fulfill the requirement for the social science majors. Also, anyone can sign up for the class...so no assessment or Intermediate Algebra required. Does anyone know if this class also fulfills the math requirement for IGETC?

It needs a prerequisite of intermediate algebra to count.

no… it doesn’t.

as it turns out, i and a few hundred other CCC students took Math XL10 through UCLA Extension last year in order to fulfill the math portion of the IGETC.

you do not need any prereqs (nor do you have to take any entrance exams) to either enroll in the class or have it count to satisfy your IGETC.

i HIGHLY advise taking the class if, like me, you find math tedious as ****.
it’s also a good class for people who like easy A’s
- all tests and quizzes were open note and weren’t even that hard in the first place.

the price is a little steep (~$400), but well worth it, imo.

I would totally suggest taking this class!

I took this class about two summers ago and earned an A.

-The teacher is cute and he makes the material as accessable as possible. Open note and open book. Of course you have to study, but it’s totally do able!

I’m actually enrolled in this class right now. I checked with the graduation office at Los Angeles Pierce College, and they said there is already precedent to use Stats XL10 at UCLA Extension to fulfill the math requirement on the IGETC. I can’t say for sure for SMC, I’d check with their graduation office just to be sure, but I’d say there’s a very, very good chance that they’d certify your IGETC with that class.

This was my first math class in 9 years, and I’ll tell you that I have 100% of the points available in that class (session is 6/23 - 9/8, so it’s almost over). Here are the details:

–Instructor: Kevin Nichols. Cool guy!
–4 homework assignments (12-20 problems available on his personal website, due every 2-4 weeks)
–12 weeks, 3 hrs/week (over summer at least)
–No assessment test, no pre-reqs!
–4 quizzes (3-5 mulitiple choice, 2 “free-response” i.e. show your work), 1 midtem, 1 final (quizzes and exams are both open book/note), one lab (takes about an hour at home, have a few weeks to complete it)
–Class is curved: 30% A’s, B’s, C’s. 10% D’s, F’s (if people do better than expected, expect a higher proportion of A’s and B’s, he says.)
–Easy A. He says that if you show up all the time (doesn’t take roll) and turn in something for homework, you’ll get a C (but I think that’s even if you fail every exam, if I remember correctly).
–Just make sure you take good notes. Write down everything he writes on the board, including examples (sometimes he re-uses them on exams). He’s really good about outlining every new concept step-by-step.

If you have any questions, message me! Trust me, take this class! I was somewhat intimidated about having to take math, after 9 years in a math void, and this class was the best thing that could’ve happened to me. Again, a bit pricey ($578 including parking, which was $108), but totally worth it. Can’t sing the praises of this method of filling your math requirement highly enough! :)

[edit] Also, short answer: rpicton is wrong. Long answer: I know that the catalog says there’s a pre-req, but it’s just not true, and I’m not sure why (who cares!). All I did was find the class online, call up, enroll and pay. They didn’t say anything about a pre-req, and I didn’t have one. If they were serious about it, they’d ask for a transcript, so don’t worry about that. So, yeah, no pre-req for Stats XL 10.

On a side note, does anyone know how to enter this class on their UC application? Stats XL 10? Stats 10? Stats XL10?

Can someone post a link to the class? I can’t seem to find it on the UCLA extension website

And here’s the class website, complete with syllabus and homework assignment PDF’s.

Thank you empirescrumble!! I appreciate your long discription and link. I love this board!!

No worries SMCguy! I just realized I didn’t add the link to my last post, haha. I had a long day yesterday. Anyway, here’s the link to the class website. Some of the links may not work, so if that’s the case, just save the PDF files and open them on your computer. Oh, and don’t get intimidated. For the homework assignments, it’s only the circled problems that you need to do. Besides, I’m pretty sure he only checks for your name and not the actual work or answers. Here’s the link to the class site:

i put ‘Stats XL10’.
you’ll have to enter a separate school code for UCLA Extension.
no big deal.

Awesome, thanks pinkerfloyd. I wasn’t sure if I needed to leave the XL in or not and just keep the course number, and for the life of me, I couldn’t find the statistics dept. abbreviation (figured it could be either ‘stat’ or ‘stats’, but couldn’t decide, haha). :)

I just realized I kept spelling extension as extention. I guess it’s Cal State LA for me lol

Hey :)

i was thinking of taking the class for july, but i am honestly struggling with my math class right now
Is the teacher good at explaining things?

And if the class says closed and i show up, is there a chance he will add me?

Thanks :)

was the teacher Miles Chen?

Is the course transferable to USC?
