This may be a foolish question but I was wondering how long it usually takes an investment banker to reach the VP position and how much the average VP makes? Thank you!!

Instead of titles you need to learn the hierarchy of pay within IB Businesses. All investment banking does not pay the same. Here’s my guess as to the best paying departments with the largest bonuses.

1)Internal Trader-running company book of money(The guys that can break a bank)
2)Banker-Large offering, stock IPO
3)Banker-Private equity clients
4)Banker-small stock offering/Bond offerings
5)Banker-Corporate/Government
6)Banker-General Consulting

The top guys in 1-3 can still make a 7, low 8 figure bonus. Yes, $10,000,000.

I have no idea what sosomenza is talking about…

Internal trader = prop trading? That’s not part of IBD.
Banker-larger offering, stock IPO;bond offerings = capital markets?
Banker-Private equity clients = is that just the financial sponsors group?
Banker-Corporate/Government = never heard of this
Banker-General Consulting = never heard of this either

When people say VP in investment banking, it’s usually referring to the advisory business (M&A, industrials, TMT, sponsors, etc.). You normally do 3 years as an associate after business school before becoming a VP. They probably make ~400k.
