investment banking choice

im a prospective freshman trying to decided where to go next year. i am applying to OSU and IU. im in ohio, so id be able to go to osu for instate tuition rather than oos for IU, but my parents are paying for school and cost is not much of an issue. im looking to major in finance and hopefully get into Investment banking, which i know kelley has a good program for. i dont think osu really has much of a program for this, and i know kelley is usually ranked higher than OSU's fisher school of biz. question is, do you think it would be worth it to go oos to come to IU, or are the opportunities not really that much better?

If you're truly set on a career in Investment Banking, then Kelley would be a great school for you. However, in order to guarantee and internship and/or job, you would most likely have to be admitted to the Investment Banking Workshop which is highly competitive (average GPA of 3.75) and admits about 30 people out of 200 who apply (15% admit rate). Keep in mind that this all will happen during your junior year so you'll have to keep a steady GPA for your first two years.

All in all I'd say if you're not prepared to slave away at the library (or wherever else you study) to get ahead of everyone else, then your chances of getting into the Investment Banking Workshop are pretty slim. Some of the kids who were admitted this year are so maniacal about studying that they virtually spend their whole waking hours at the library - much like they expect to spend most of their waking hours in their future careers.

You mentioned that cost wasn't an issue so I would recommend coming to IU-Kelley if you value prestige and a somewhat higher salary upon graduation, even if you ultimately choose not to pursue IBanking. This school will provide you with all the opportunities to be successful; you just need to decide which ones you're going to take advantage of and go after them with all your might.

yes, with IB being so competitive i cant be too sure il lend up in that field, but i am for sure going to be working in business. you mentioned prestige and higher pay and although it might make me seem like im planning my future around the wrong reasons, prestige of my college as well as salary are two very big factors in what i will study and the field i will enter. indiana has pretty much become my first choice over the past few months and a campus visit last weekend pretty much secured it as my top choice.
