Investment Banking from Berkeley Undergrad: CS vs Haas

(CS, not EECS)

B.A Computer Science from UC Berkeley - College of Letters & Science
vs
B.S Business Administration from UC Berkeley - Haas School of Business

I am an undecided entering freshman, but I'm leaning towards CS. I've been passionate about both fields for years. Unfortunately, double majoring will not be an option.

If I majored in CS, how much opportunity for Investment Banking would I be sacrificing, compared to the opportunities from going for Haas?

Perhaps CS can do both, but Business cannot?

I would definitely go with Haas if you are interested in breaking into banking. Haas is definitely a strong semi-target and target in CA/west coast. Berkley in general is a great school, but if you want to break into banking, I would definitely recommend going for Haas, networking, and then, if you like tech, you’ve got your ticket to break into technology banking.

Good luck and PM me if you have any other questions.

IBanker

Thanks for the reply, it definitely affirms that Haas would be the better choice for a career in banking.

However, could CS potentially grant me the possibility of both career options? Business definitely couldn’t do CS, but perhaps CS could do Business? (and by business, I mean something like the old-fashioned analyst position at a BB in NY)

If CS would be too far-fetched for IB, I’ll accept that I must choose between the two majors as divisors between the two careers. It’s a choice I’ll have to make anyway (sooner or later), but at least I won’t have in my head that “CS could do both”. And even if CS could do IB, well, technically any major could, but the chances can be significantly smaller.

It’s already tough to go from Haas to a BB in NY… and it would make sense that an unrelated degree would further reduce the chances significantly.

If you have an impressive GPA, great personality and you’re good at interviews, you will get into IB even if you have neither major from Berkeley. Several grads from PolSci, Psych and even History or English have gotten into IB. Having gone to Haas gives you an edge. But IB placements for Berkeley grads are not exclusive to Haas grads.

Awesome, thanks RML.
