im currently a sophomore in a target ivy league school. have 3.8 gpa and pretty good extracurriculars (president of investment related club, eboard on several others). i'm looking to get some sort of investment banking experience this upcoming summer. i have applied to SEO but due to inexperience i bombed the interview completely. I have since read the Vault guides and studied some finance related interview questions. So my question is, besides the super tough diversity programs, what are some of the summer internship opportunities for sophomores that would put me in a prime position to get an IBD summer analyst position at Goldman or MS? Do I have a shot at BBs at all? Also, i am more than willing to work in boutiques as long as Im actually involved in live deals. How do I find those? Do they recruit on campus at all? If not, how do I reach out to them? What are their recruiting timelines like? Is it later than the BBs?

You just missed the deadline for Lehman's Vision Scholarship, which is undoubtedly one of the toughest to get. UBS has a four day externship called "Discovery Days."

I can tell you that it is NOT impossible - I am a first year student at a T20 school that is not a target for many large markets but I just landed a summer internship at a BB in NYC. Pad your resume with all of your achievements. Network, network, network. Kick butt on the interviews. IBs want you to be active not passive.

No, no way I could get a summer analyst position. Those are generally only for juniors. I was offered a "regular" internship - better than nothing for a freshman, I suppose.

I worked as a sophomore analyst at a BB this past summer, and I can tell you that there are individuals who interviewed during the fall for '08 summer analyst positions.

Due to:
1. Accelerated interviews for individuals who worked as summer analysts at rival banks.

Yea, its the juniors who work as summer analysts (the summer after their sophomore year) who can get accelerated interviews at other banks if they contact HR.

I'm looking for a reality check here: I'm a Junior with a 3.25 gpa. Do you think I can get SEO with this or and if not, what kind of companies should I start considering for a summer analyst/consulting position?
All responses appreciated.

so how exactly do you apply to these mid market firms and boutiques? do you just mail HR your resume if they dont come to your school to recruit? thanks.

yea people always say to target boutique banks, but how do you internships with them? same question as above? and how do you reach out to alums, what are you supposed to tell them?
