IOE Schedule

So I plan on taking IOE 201 202 265, MATH 214 and ASIANLANG 101- intro Chinese. I was wondering if I should hold off a class for the winter. Also what classes should I take winter?

Like taking 265 or MATH 214 next semester.

That schedule is pretty normal for fall semester ioe sophomores. Why were you thinking of holding something off?

In Winter you could take 316/366, 333/334, 373, and you could try fitting something else in (TechComm if you can get into it, one of the non-IOE engineering classes maybe). You could do 310 in Winter but I recommend taking it in Fall.

i was thinking about holding it off because i thought it was a really hard schedule. i want to do very well, have a 3.7> GPA and taking IOE 201/202, 265, MATH 214 and ASIANLAN might be too much. how are these ioe classes? are they hard to do well/time consuming?

i’m not familiar with asianlang101, but none of the other courses you listed are difficult nor time consuming

This is a decent schedule although I amn ot familiar with AsianLang 101
IOE 201 and 202 are not bad at all and they will give you a good flavor of what IOE is like (especially IOE 202)
If Guzman is teaching IOE 265, then the lectures are recorded online and the content is easy as well.
Math 214 is not hard at all and if you have done matrix algebra before, then a lot of the content will be familiar for you.

With regards to your winter schedule, I would recommend that you take IOE 333, 334, 310 or take IOE 373 and IOE 310. You might wanna take a humanities/social science class along with those and take a non-IOE engineering elective with that (I would STRONGLY recommend taking NERS 211, it one of the easiest engineering classes ever, much easier than all IOE classes)

Keep in mind that IOE 310, 333, 334 and 373 in particular can be fairly time consuming so make sure that you take an easy humanties/social science class with those.

Hope this helped!

I took all of the classes you mentioned except for AsianLang 101 my Fall semester last year.

Here is my take on the classes

The most important point for all of these courses:

GO TO OFFICE HOURS!!!

The material is usually explained a lot more clearly in office hours and a lot of homework answers are given (whether it be through collaboration with other students or the GSIs/Professors themselves).

IOE 201-Seiford
The content was not that difficult. The homework grading, however, seemed quite inconsistent. Additionally, mistakes on homework resulted in the loss of a lot of points very quickly. Also, we had a group project at the end of the class that had VERY VAGUE directions. I don’t think the grading on that project was harsh though.

IOE 202-Daskin
After the first homework set, which was on probability, the course material became very challenging. However, homework sets were not bad if you work with friends. Additionally, we had a take home exam that was similar to the homework. There was also ample extra credit, which made getting an A far from impossible. The hardest graded part about this course was by far the final exam. I know multiple people who were in a position where they could get a 76 or above on the final and still get an A (not an A-, but an A) because they had obtained almost all of the other points up to that point (including extra credit).

IOE 265-Guzman
Homework is online and it is usually not too bad. Use of Minitab (which you learn how to use in this class) and Excel quickly speed up the time necessary to complete it. This class also has lab assignments were the GSI pretty much tell you step-by-step how to do the lab. This is a class where you should extremely close to (I mean 99-100%) of the points outside of the exams.

Math 214-Neftin
My math 214 professor was amazing! He is a nice, caring individual who wants students to succeed. I strongly recommend buying the solutions manual for this class. The homework is not super hard, but the text book has hardly any useful examples.

Overall, I wouldn’t consider any of these classes to be super easy. However, achieving an A- or above in all these classes is certainly doable.

I personally did a lot better in these classes than in Physics 140/240, Math 216, and Engr 101.

To the IOEs who replied on this thread, what classes are you taking next semester?

I’m taking

-IOE 333/334
-IOE 373
-IOE 440
-IOE 447

I’m not an IOE (ya know… cuz I’m a man), but I’m taking 425 the first 7 weeks

I’m taking:

CEE 265
EECS 477
IOE 474
IOE 425
IOE 460
PHIL 441 or something like that (I forget the number)

Last semester apparently 202 was harder than normal but Daskin is a great teacher.
