Why do non-IOE engineers at Michigan make fun of IOE people so much? They make jokes that it is so easy and how IOEs get no where in life. They say it is not even really engineering just because there aren't really any labs. I do admit that it is not as rigorous as an EECS major or ChemE but that is simply because of the nature of the subject. I mean come on, it is still more difficult than any LSA major (except math) and even Ross. Still is gets no respect. Michigan IOE has consistently been second in the nation. The median starting salaries are on par with Mechanical and higher than many other engineering majors.

why do you care? Never bothered me at all when I know I’ll have a higher career trajectory and make more than 99.9% of the other engineering majors.

They are just mad that they study harder and don’t make more than people that study less. Or maybe they are mad that eventually they report to IOEs in middle management or get downsized by IOE turned consultants working at MBB.

yeah, bluedevilsfan, i remember you posted something similar before comparing ioe/ross… why do you care so much about what people think of your major?

I would generally make it a rule to not listen to Bearcat’s opinion on questions like these, lol .

But yeah, why do you care what jokes I may make?

“They make jokes that it is so easy and how IOEs get no where in life.”

Really? IOEs get “no where” in life? IOE degrees are VERY EMPLOYABLE. At the CoE career fair, almost every company is looking for IOE students. The only majors that are in higher demand at the career fair are the EECS majors

What CoE bachelor’s degree had the most job acceptances?

SPOILER ALERT!

IOE

That’s how many reported. If only 83 (out of like 200) IOEs got jobs than we’d be in pretty bad shape.

Additionally, there are some issues with that report. Look at BME Bachelors. The mean, median, and range conflict with each other. No more than two of those can be correct given their sample.

I’ve never heard anyone make a joke that IOE’s get no where in life.

That it is easier? Sure. But not that they won’t get anywhere. We’re all engineers here, we’re all the best :)

Look at that range in salaries though, man. Anywhere from 30k to 100k (and that’s just what’s reported). Being the most businessy maybe your “connections” matter more, idk.

Nevermind this comment. Some sort of transcription issue on my part.

I know several UM IOE former students, one former graduate student, and one doing the 5yr Bachelor/Master program right now. As I can tell, they are like hot cakes in the job market. All got very good jobs immediately upon graduation. One of them got multiple excellent offers from big firms and changed for an even better job in one year. The one will be in senior this year got internship every year and even worked overseas.

If you are in Michigan engineering and you don’t have a job before you graduate then you messed up somewhere
