Iovine and Young Class of 2022 Discussion Thread

Hey everyone! Couldn’t find an Iovine and Young applicant discussion thread for this year so thought I’d start one now. Anyone have any idea when interview selection comes out and how many people will be interviewed? Also, if we are being considered for merit scholarships will we get the box and everything like everyone else on the same day or will we learn about this separately? Best of luck to everyone!

I have no clue about the box thing either! I was looking at the old thread and saw that they found out last year on Jan 25, about a day before the portal updated…I hope I get the weekend (or into USC…) it’s my top choice!

I applied on the day of december 1. Will I still be considered for merit?

whathaveidone5 yes- all applications on or before December 1st are considered for merit scholarships. Thus, with IYA’s application deadline on the same date, every IYA applicant is automatically considered for merit.

Any word on when the lucky ones will hear about the interviews? Getting anxious…

I don’t know much about the IYA, but I did see that this came out via email at end of package mailing, just day before portal update for merit scholarships (as mentioned above). So this was received on Jan 25, 2017 putting it on Wednesday Jan 24th this week (which is my guess, but could be wrong!)

Dear Student,

Thank you for applying to the USC Jimmy Iovine and Andre Young Academy for Arts, Technology and the Business of Innovation. I am pleased to inform you that you have been selected to interview with the Academy admission review committee. Interviews will take place on the USC campus, Friday through Monday, February 17 through 20, 2017. To progress further in the selection process, an interview is mandatory. While the in-person interview is strongly recommended, if these dates present a significant conflict and you are unable to travel, we can arrange for an interview via Skype. However, if you would like to be considered for an Academy merit scholarship, it is strongly recommended that you interview in person.

Please visit usciovineandyoungacademy2.fullslate.com to RSVP and reserve your in-person interview time. If you are requesting a Skype interview, you must contact me directly at jvernon@usc.edu. Once all the in-person interviews are scheduled, you will be contacted to schedule your Skype interview. These will most likely take place on Monday, February 20. Note that the deadline to schedule your interview is Monday, February 6 (however, interviews are scheduled on a first come first served basis).

During the above dates, we will host several optional events to introduce you to the Academy leadership, faculty, students and staff. We will also offer tours of the USC campus and the Garage, the Academy’s classroom and collaborative creation space. Please see the attached schedule of these events you and your family may wish to attend over the weekend. While these events are optional, registration is required. We ask that you limit attendance to yourself and 2 family members. Please register by Tuesday, February 14 at: https://iyainterviewweekend2017.eventbrite.com/.

For those flying to Los Angeles for the interview, we are happy to reimburse a portion of the applicant’s airfare. We can cover up to $60 for travel originating within CA, NV, and AZ, and up to $200 for all other domestic flights. Unfortunately, we cannot reimburse for international travel. More information about reimbursement will be provided once you have RSVP’d for your interview. Taxi fare from LAX airport is approximately $50, Uber/Lyft rates may be lower. There are several hotels located near campus that offer a USC discounted rate. If you would like to book a room at one of these hotels, see the attached document for reservation details.

Also attached is a map of the USC Campus. Buildings where events will be held are circled, as well as the most convenient parking garage. If parking, please mention you are with the “USC Iovine and Young Academy Interview Weekend” as there is limited space available in the garage. Parking is $12 per day.
Please note that every potential Academy student that is interviewed is eligible for the USC merit scholarships, which include the full-tuition Trustee scholarships, the half-tuition Presidential Scholarships, and the one-quarter tuition Deans Scholarships. These scholarships will be awarded upon admission with decisions finalized by early April.

Thanks for the info! I am so nervous to find out. I wonder how many applicants IYA got this year - I feel like it must have risen due to the publicity they have been getting!

Has anyone called to ask a time frame? We can’t get packages, but last year they went out tonight on this Wednesday so I am stressing!!!

Didn’t hear anything yet.

Good luck to everyone who applied! I’m super excited to see what happens in the next couple days—it’s also my top choice. And thanks for starting the thread @boston617781. I thought about it in December but I’ve been so busy lately I completely forgot haha.

@bhguy2 - how do you know that we’ll be hearing in the next couple of days? Would it be an email, regular mail, portal update? I’m getting so nervous :-/

They seem to come out same time as general merit awards, see post above with letter.

@CADREAMIN - thank you! So, based on the above: notifications for IYA should come tomorrow as email (assuming the portals will update on Friday), right?

For the IYA applicants who don’t get the interview invite and will be considered for the alternative major - how would they be notified? Email or no notification at all?

That’s the assumption, you will find colleges do the same thing year after year, they are a machine to get all this info out.

Hey all, I found this thread from 2016 - this has good info it, should read through it for some answers. It does say you get an invite to interview or a “rejection” letter. Not of fan of the term “rejection.” Seems harsh, I like “on to other options.”

so, based on the last year’s thread (thank you @CADREAMIN ) notifications about interviews came on Feb 1st :-/ So we have a LONG wait ahead.

I think last year’s letter about getting an interview was on Jan 24th (which I posted above), putting it at equivalent of tomorrow, hope so for you all!

no email yet :-/ has anybody received an email?

no…only 3pm PST so i think they might be waiting until later if it’s tonight!!

I didn’t get the interview :frowning:

i didnt get an interview either :frowning:
