I don’t know what other students do but I am from OOS and I am planning on moving in the day before the official move in date. There will probably be less people moving in that day so it will be easier.

Good to know, traveler92…thanks – I’m sure my D will not want to be 1st or last one in! Anyone else?

I’d hope to move in any time prior to “official” move in date! I’m already dreading 200 trips up the tiny elevator! Anything to minimize the congestion is great and if I have to pay the minimal fee, no problem.

Any information on: Currier, Burge, Hillcrest and Reinow?

Also where is Law & Legal Studies housed? Its a living learning community program.

Coolbrezze, have you not visited the Iowa campus? You really should see it first-hand if it’s a serious contender for you. You can see these dorms first-hand.

As for Law & Legal Studies, I’d call housing and ask them. I read somewhere that not all LLC’s have permanent “homes,” which seems a little weird to me but some are perhaps new.

Burge is the large dorm, mostly freshman, with big dining court on the first floor. Currier is very close by but smaller and (I think) a quiet house. Hillcrest is across the river, further from the Pentacrest where most freshman classes are. I would suggest this to be a disadvantage. Rienow is also across the river.

Oh, and Coolbrezze, if you have really not applied for housing at this point your choices could be very limited. When we were on campus we were told that applications made after about November be at a disadvantage, and now it’s nearly April. Another good reason to phone housing.

Yeah I could possibly be attending here next year, I haven’t done my housing application but plan to do so next week.

Housing was very difficult to decided on, wasn’t sure how to order my preferences. I did select LLC which would rule over all.

As I was getting ready to pay my housing deposit I just notice that I was qualified for defer payment. From my understanding, financially it was better for me to select defer payment ( which if I notice months ago would have completed). Can anyone explain to me their understanding of a defer payment?

Coolbrezze,

Unless you have a different deferral opportunity, and if my reading of this web site is correct:
[Payment Options - University Billing Office - The University of Iowa](http://www.uiowa.edu/ubill/payment_options/)
then, by deferring payment, you pay in 3 equal monthly installments each semester for fall and spring (so the length of the deferral is not too long) and there is a relatively modest fee of $20 tacked on to the last payment (the fee is not modest if the amt you are paying is small). It seems like a good option if the person making the payment does not have cash on hand to make a lump sum payment, or if you want to keep the money invested at a high rate of return as long as possible.

On a $10,000 payment due in August, you would get to keep $6500 invested for an extra month, and $3500 invested for an extra two months, so if you were earning 2% annually after taxes, I think this would save you about as much as the $20 deferral fee. If you owe more, if you are earning much more than 2% of the money, or cash flow issues preclude a one time payment, it is a reasonable deal. Otherwise, making a single payment is easier.

So basically, I think it comes down more to cash flow vs. convenience than anything else, since the deferral is very short-term.

Disclaimer – this was a “back-of-the-envelope” calculation, so use at your own risk, and I hope it helps!

Thanks for the information.

Well I’m just really glad I have my housing completed and finally orientation dates.

Got into the living learning community (great), I was assign to Hillcrest hall. Any opinions of the hall?

This may make little sense but I will say error reading, assign to wrong LLC not law careers. Now I have to wait. Hillcrest…maybe not, ignore my above post.

Not quite sure what you’re saying, cb, but sounds like you have SOME kind of assignment. That’s great - I thought you were in trouble given the late date of your app.

Did you get a mailing with your hall assignment? We’ve gotten nothing and I don’t see it on ISIS.

My son got an e-mail yesterday with his LLC assignment so he knows what dorm he’ll be in but not room or roommate. Not sure what cb is saying either, did you get assigned to the wrong LLC?

Izzie…That’s what I infer from CB’s note – unexpected LLC assignment.
CB, I assume you are contacting the housing dept to clarify?

Our D also received her LLC assignment yesterday (the right one)…great news, and one more to-do item checked off the list.

funyet, was this via email?

A ha! My son was sent an email saying he has a place in Daum/Honors LLC. Very exciting. Of course I had to tell him to check his email. Sigh.

Interestingly, when I check ISIS under “status of housing application” it still shows all dorm assignment items as undetermined.

Beastman, I think that is because the dorm room/roommate thing is not assigned yet…comes later. Daum is in a great location!

CB – if you are in Hillcrest (sounds like you are still sorting it out), I think it is also in high demand – good location, has one of the two cafeterias.

Yeah Hillcrest and Burge seem to be popular due to what is offered within the hall.
As for my application, I was not able to complete it as early within my senior year as I would have liked.
