I know both of these schools are ranked very closely by U.S. News (#72 and #77, respectively), but which school would you recommend based on academic reputation and national perception? I know people associate corn and hogs with Iowa and "rednecks" with Alabama, so I was interested in finding out this information from other folks around the country.

By the way, I was interested in pursuing an online degree, so factors like campus life/atmosphere do not factor in on my decision.

Thanks in advance!

What state do you live in now ? Which is cheaper ? What major ?

Personally I would go with University of Iowa. hogs>rednecks lol

For an online degree, your classmates will be all around the world, so any social identification with corn or the like is immaterial. What will matter is your major, your grades, the recommendations you ultimately earn from your faculty members, and any career placement services that you have access to. Unless you get lucky enough to be interviewed for a job by someone who has graduated from the particular university that you complete your degree at, the name on your diploma isn’t likely to matter much at all.

Now if it were ISU, rather than U of I, because there are so many in my family, and I’m sitting here wearing my dad’s old college sweatshirt on this cold day, I’d have a more definite recommendation!

^This is University of Iowa.

Yeah, I caught that, and re-wrote my post, but you were too quick for me XtremePower!

Yes, I was referring specifically to the ‘University of Iowa’. Thanks for clearing that up to happymom, Xtreme.

I understand what you’re trying to say, happymom, however, the reason why I ask about the national perception of both schools academically is to make sure that there isn’t some sort of “stigma” associated with either school, which would limit my chances when applying for work (assuming my employer didn’t attend either institution).

What would your major be? Is there any evidence that one program is stronger than the other?

I’d suggest you start with that question.

Then pop a note off to the career centers, and ask about job placement for your major. Pay attention to where the graduates end up.

I was thinking about pursuing an undergrad business degree. There are business school rankings available for both schools, however, I believe those are for the grad programs, so it’s difficult to tell.

Bama’s undergrad B-school is ranked.

Why are you considering online? Are you an older student?

Ok…I now remember you. You’re married seeking a 2nd degree.

What is your state of residence? There’s no point in paying OOS costs for either school. Bama’s OOS tuition is about $22k. How would you pay for that? Loans? Bad idea.

Hey mom2 :)

I’m in Florida. I’m planning on finishing up this degree, then applying in-state to UF for my Masters.

Go with Iowa. Its cheaper.

Go with Florida…it’s likely cheaper

Go with Iowa. Its cheaper.

no, it’s not. It’s OOS tuition is higher.

I will be applying to Florida for my grad degree. They offer an undergraduate program, but it involves travel, which is not possible in my situation. I need something that is completely online with no residency requirements.

happymom: Which career center do you suggest I contact to get this sort of information?

What about the other Florida publics…FSU, UCF, USF, FIU, etc???

Are the rates of online classes the same as OOS rates for on-campus students at OOS schools?

“no, it’s not. It’s OOS tuition is higher.”

Opp my bad got it confused with Iowa State lol

Yes, I did check the Florida public schools you mentioned, however, FSU, UCF, USF or FIU do not offer any undergraduate business programs online.

Why do you need a 2nd degree in business (management)? You don’t need an undergrad degree in business to get an MBA. I can’t imagine that a degree in management is a prereq for any graduate degree. Management is probably the least beneficial of any business degree and not really any different than having a degree in Poli Sci or other social science. Help us out here.

I would say Iowa is more prestigious, especially if you’re going for business.
