Just want to know, did anybody get in?

i got in just notified today…i was just about to make a new post as well!

How would this program rank against Garcia and HSHSP in terms of the number of Siemens/Intel/ISEF (Semi)finalists?
Thanks.

Need some feedback…

Science2015, could you post your stats?

sure
asian female, junior next year, 4.0 unweighted gpa

Just noticed Belin Blank website has linked to abstracts from last year’s participants.

[Secondary Student Training Program (SSTP) / Belin-Blank Center Summer Programs](http://www.education.uiowa.edu/belinblank/students/summer/programs/9-11/sstp/)

I’m so excited to go to SSTP! :)

What were your lab placements?

not sure yet, the emails get sent to my parents instead for some odd reason
hey chrisLieto, are you going to SSTP? where are you all from (also @whitetiger64)?

You probably put your parent’s email in the info section.

@science I’m still waiting on other programs, but there’s a good chance I will. Are you going to ask Ms. Warren for an extension on the April 10 deadline?(I’m from California, you?)

@chris I probably won’t ask for an extension since the chances of me getting into UF-SSTP is so small it’s pretty much negligible. and same! I’m also from California :D

Wait, did you get a lab placement?

@Science2015, same. From what I’ve gathered UF-SSTP takes around 80-100 ppl/yr, mostly from Florida, and (as expected) mostly Juniors. I heard somewhere that they had a 57% acceptance rate, but who knows if that’s true. I think I’m in the same situation as you (WL?) for that program. Other than that, I’m relieved that I have someplace to go this summer.

Oh, and who knows what UI-SSTP’s acceptance rate is? I know it’s not RSI/HSHSP/Simon’s low, but it can’t be that high either…

DS was placed with a Computer Science professor. Comp Sci was his third choice. Physics was his first choice and Astronomy was second. He is a sophomore finishing up AP Physics and AP Comp Sci at the public high school. He is a very strong student but hasn’t done any research before.

We live locally and DH works at the UofI (Chemist). While I don’t know much about the SSTP in particular, I can try to answer any questions about the general area. DS participated in the one week summer program last year (Physics). My other son will probably be doing the one week program in Engineering this summer as well.

GL everyone!

Trilliums, what is UoI’s campus like, and how is Iowa City?

The Iowa River runs through the campus resulting in two distinct sides. Plus, the river is edged by a primary route road (busy for Iowa City :))

East side has College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Engineering, many residence halls, new student rec center, student union. East side campus is edged by IC’s downtown area w/ pedestrian mall, numerous restaurants, cafes, bars, shops, public library, public rec center, etc., with many options within walking distance.

Belin Blank Center and the residence Hall are on East campus.
[Campus Master Plan: East Campus/url. If your lab is in Bio/Chem/Comp Sci/Physics, it will probably be an easy walk from the dorm.

If your lab is medical, you probably will need to take a shuttle (Cambus) across the river to the West side/Health Sciences campus. Arts and Athletics are also on west side.
[url=http://www.facilities.uiowa.edu/MasterPlan/Maps/West.htm]University of Iowa Facilities Management: Campus&Facilities Planning](http://www.facilities.uiowa.edu/MasterPlan/Maps/East.htm)
West side has fewer businesses for lunches but there are Univ cafeterias in various buildings.

I don’t find the campus particularly attractive but admittedly I have not walked through much of the inner Univ area. Various parts of the campus have been under renovation since the 2008 flood. The downtown area is an odd mix of modern, industrial and 1900s (plainer brick) architecture–I don’t know the correct terminology here but I was surprised by how disjointed it looks.

We moved here ~3years ago from Southern California. You will probably fly into Cedar Rapids airport just north of town. This airport is tiny compared to the CA International airports we were used to. We immediately felt as though we had been transported back in time. The lifestyle here is noticeably slower and more relaxed. The area around the airport is corn/soybean crop land and hog farms. And yes, it is very flat. But, IC offers varied and interesting amenities (lectures, performances, leisure activities) for being a relatively small Midwestern town. It is a liberal area of the state, has a strong local foods movement and probably the easiest part of Iowa to find vegetarian restaurants. I think people of all kinds of political backgrounds/lifestyles would feel at ease and welcomed here though.

Also, compared to S. California, it rains here. A lot! Water just falls from the sky. We usually have 2-3 weeks when the summer weather is unbearably humid and oppressive, generally in Aug though so you all might miss that.

Last year the students went to a nearby lake, had some rec classes scheduled for them, played cards and went out for frozen yogurt, etc. The dorm room was pretty bare bones but adequate with closet space and plenty of outlets. Shared bathrooms down the hall. I am not sure about laundry. Here is a link to the Daum residence hall where DS stayed last year. His only complaint was poor quality breakfast foods.

[Daum Hall - Residence Halls - University Housing - The University of Iowa](http://housing.uiowa.edu/departments/reslife/daum/index.htm)

@Trilliums Thanks for the feedback sounds great so far…although I hope the breakfast foods have improved :P

@chrisLieto yup, waitlisted for UF-SSTP. I got my first lab choice though, biology/genetics, so that’s good. I already accepted Iowa’s since I’m pretty sure UF is a no go.

Wait a second, the dorms don’t have a bathroom? Is it a brick building?

@Science 2015, was UFSSTP the only other program you applied to?

Hope others on CC have gotten in…

I’m guessing one hall shares bathrooms, something like a public bathroom…

@chrisLieto, no I applied to some other camps as well but none as wellknown or of the same studystuff as SSTP-Iowa so I’ll be going there even though I got accepted to the other camps

Seems too soon to start a Facebook group lol. Will you be making one? I kinda want to talk to the people that ill be spending my summer with beforehand.

I honestly don’t know. I wouldn’t mind getting to know everyone a bit better, but I’d be ok if we all got there as complete strangers. It really depends on how many people decide to wander onto CC and decide to say “oh hi guys somethingsomethingsomething”

maybe a little later?
